Nick Montgomery is ready to return to first-team action following his six-match injury lay-off.
Montgomery, who has been struggling with an ankle injury sustained at Yeovil in August, is hoping to play some part against leaders Charlton at Bramall Lane on Saturday after coming through 90 minutes for the reserves in midweek unscathed. Montgomery commenting said: "It was good to come back ahead of schedule and I'm pleased to show the gaffer that I am ready. "Obviously from my point of view I hope I have put myself in the frame for the weekend. "The last month has been very tough watching matches. I'm not a good watcher. I just want to be out there on the pitch. "I end up kicking every ball and it's frustrating, but we have been playing very well."

Manager Danny Wilson hopes to have knee-injury victims Johannes Ertl and Andy Taylor available again before Christmas. Ertl has not started a game since March while Taylor missed the second-half of last season after being helped from th pitch during the Yorkshire derby against Hull on Boxing Day. "They're making progress but they've still got a lot of work to do," Wilson commented . "But it's good to see them both moving in the right direction. "I would think we are looking at before Christmas. That's providing everything goes according to plan. "I'm not one for strict timescales. I don't think they serve a purpose because situations like this can change very quickly."

Wycombe Wanderers 1 Sheffield United 0 (Attendance: 5,506 )
Blades Line-up : Simonsen, Lowton, Williams (Jean-Francois 68), Collins, Maguire, Doyle, Williamson (Mendez-Laing 77), McDonald, Quinn, Evans, Porter (Cresswell 69).
Man of The Match: Kevin McDonald.
Wycombe Line-up: Bull, Foster, Sandell, Johnson, Tunnicliffe, Lewis, Harding, Donnelly (Bloomfield 85), Grant (Halls 88), Harris (Strevens 77), Beavon.
Referee: James Linington (Isle of Wight).
A Stuart Beavon effort handed Wycombe a shock 1-0 victory over Sheffield United at Adams Park.
Blades Manager Danny Wilson named an unchanged side for the encounter – the first between the two sides in a League match. Wycombe made three changes to the side with Beavon returning up front, while Kadeem Harris was handed his debut partnering Ben Harding in midfield.
Beavon was amongst the action in the first three minutes when his snapshot towards the near post was saved by goalkeeper Steve Simonsen, before the hosts showed their attacking intent by leaving three players forward for a United corner. However, they were forced to endure long spells without possession as the Blades showed their class with a range of passing, although their only sight of goal past a stubborn Wycombe defence was a wayward 20-yard shot from Michael Doyle on 16 minutes.
At the other end, an opportunistic drive from 35 yards from Scott Donnelly almost caught out Simonsen, while Lee Williamson headed over the bar for United after great work from Chris Porter down the right. Wycombe's resilience was impressive, and it was the same attitude that brought about their first league goal since 16th August on 31 minutes. Stuart Lewis pass forward fell kindly for Beavon but there was still work to do as he took the ball on and fired superbly into the top corner.
All of a sudden a new-found confidence oozed through the home side, with Beavon and Lewis shooting wide from decent opportunities. Williamson came close for United with a left-footed daisy-cutter which fizzed just past goalkeeper Nikki Bull's post before the half came to a close.
At the start of the second half, a lightning-quick break from Harris just after the interval resulted in his shot being palmed around the post by Simonsen, before Ched Evans rattled the crossbar with a sensational volley from 25 yards which might have just brushed the fingertips of Bull.
Joel Grant had a great chance to double the lead on the hour-mark when Beavon's pass to Ben Harding inside the area was knocked on to him at the back post, but the winger shinned his effort past the post with Simonsen struggling to clamber across. Grant then stung the palms of the United keeper with a powerful strike after tricky footwork from Scott Donnelly, before Simonsen was again called upon to hold on to Kadeem Harris' low cross.
However, United were second in the league for a reason, and they responded excellently, first seeing Bull dart off his line to block Evans shot before tipping the follow-up superbly over the bar.
Looking to capitalise on the shift in momentum, Wilson made two changes in quick succession to the Blades side, bringing on Lecsinel Jean-Francois and Richard Cresswell, but it was Wycombe who had the next chance, seeing Andy Sandell's teasing free-kick glanced on by Leon Johnson but just lacking the conviction to beat Simonsen.
Ched Evans missed a glorious chance when given space inside the area on 80 minutes but it was a rare lapse from the home defence, who continued to throw their bodies on the line to thwart the Blades today.
Blades Player Performance Ratings v. Wycombe : Simonsen 7 , Lowton 6 , Williams 6 , Jean-Francois 6 , Collins 6 , Maguire 6 , Doyle 6 , Williamson 6 , Mendez-Laing 6 , McDonald 7 , Quinn 6 , Evans 6 , Porter 6 , Cresswell 6 .

Sheffield United 3 Colchester United 0 (Attendance: 15,783 )
Blades Line-up : Simonsen, Lowton, Williams, Collins (Jean-Francois 87), Maguire, Doyle, Evans (Cresswell 74), Williamson, McDonald, Quinn (Flynn 77), Evans (Cresswell 74), Porter.
Man of The Match: Ched Evans.
Colchester Line-up: Cousins, Okuonghae, Heath (Baldwin 35), Izzet (Gillespie 64), Bond, Odejayi, Henderson, Wilson, Wordsworth, James (Antonio 72), Coker.
Referee: Darren Deadman (Cambridgeshire).
Goals from Ched Evans, Chris Porter and Stephen Quinn gave Sheffield United a comfortable 3-0 win at the Lane to Colchester.
Blades manager Danny Wilson recalled Evans and Kevin McDonald. Evans joined Porter in the attack, while McDonald slotted into midfield with Michael Doyle in a now familiar 4-4-2 formation. Colchester made just one change to their starting line-up, with Andy Bond starting in place of Michail Antonio.
The Blades got down to work straight from the off and scored twice in the first eleven minutes, through strike partners Evans and Porter. The first came after just three minutes, when a cleared corner was headed back into the box before another header was won. With the visitors defence appealing for an offside, the ball dropped to Evans who struck a volley past Mark Cousins in the Colchester goal.
Eight minutes later, a through ball evaded both Evans eased Matt Heath out of the way and Porter, having reacted quicker than defender Magnus Okuonghae, he lifted the ball over Cousins and into the empty net to make it 2-0.
Okuonghae could have pulled one back for the visitors soon after, but did not get the contact he needed with a poor finish from a corner. Anthony Wordsworth was the playmaker for the visitors and in the twentieth minute, his effort went narrowly over the crossbar from a free-kick.
Quinn had an effort go wide before both sides had great opportunities in the space of seconds. Evans hit the crossbar with his header from a Matthew Lowton cross and at the other end, Wordsworth was denied by a Steve Simonsen save in the Blades goal. Quinn linked well with Evans before firing wide and then a header from McDonald allowed for a chance, but his over head kick was off target. Still, it was good viewing for the Lane faithful and another player who had a outstanding afternoon was Simonsen answering his critics with some fine saves. He was again called into action once more to make a fine save palming away from Andrew Bond after a mix up between Lee Williamson and Doyle had put the visitors through with Lloyd James feeding midfielder Bond.
From the resultant clearance, Okuonghae passed the ball back to keeper Cousins who picked it up and the referee deemed it to be a deliberate back pass. The free kick was blocked and the corner came to nothing for the Blades. The last chance of the half went to the visitors when Ian Henderson shot wide after a build up involving James and striker Kayode Odejayi .
Colchester had the first chance of the second half when Odejayi failed to get his header on target from full-back Brian Wilson's cross. Twelve minutes later, the Blades hit the woodwork and it started with Harry Maguire surging forward through midfield and then Porter dribbling past Cousins before hitting the post from an acute angle. The frame of Cousin's goal was struck again four minutes later, with Evans clipping his shot over the keeper but agonisingly off the crossbar after good work from Lowton.
A minute later, it was 3-0, with Quinn starting and finishing the move to make the game safe. The visitors defence was having troubled time trying to contain the Blades all afternoon and more poor defending allowed Evans to deliver and Quinn then side-footed home in front of the Shoreham Kop to finish the the visitors off.
Soon after, Evans was substituted and received a standing ovation from the faithful, three minutes later, Quinn was withdrawn and received another ovation for his excellent work, Richard Cresswell and Ryan Flynn were the replacements. Simonsen made a superb save from Bond and at the other end of the field, McDonald twice went close. The Blades continued to pressure for a fourth goal against probably the worst opposition to visit the Lane so far this season. Just before the final, Neill Collins was substituted and the fans gave him a simmer deserved round of applause as he left the pitch. Late on, Porter could have had netted from a Cresswell cross. Really poor quality opponents today. Keep 'em coming.

Danny Wilson hopes United can bounce back after the "reality check" of Tuesday's 3-0 home defeat to Huddersfield. The Blades fell off the top of the League One table as a result of the loss but Wilson is keeping his cool after the "first setback of the season". "It's the first setback we've had," he said.
"Crikey. People get carried away but sometimes - you don't need something like this - but when it comes along it's a bit of a reality check for you and we go to back to work again and do the things that got us to the top of the league in the first place." Wilson was impressed by Huddersfield and believes they are best side the Bramall Lane outfit have come up against in the league this season. "Of course they are (the best side Sheffield United have encountered so far), there's no doubt about that," he added. "You don't have a 33-game winning streak by luck. You need a good side to do that but I have to say the goals they got weren't difficult from our point of view in which to defend. "If you analyse the game we've had better chances in the first half and certainly the second half to cause them a problem but we haven't taken our chances. "They're a good solid side. They're very strong, very experienced and they do what they do very well. "Alan Lee, Lee Novak and Jordan Rhodes are three very tough, uncompromising characters up front and they caused us a problem. "We haven't come up against a team with as much quality as that throughout the park and on the bench." Wilson knows the battle for the top six will be tough and his side will need to get back on track defensively after allowing Novak (two) and Oscar Gobern to put Huddersfield 3-0 up before half-time. "I think people in this league get a misrepresentation because there are some very good players and tough teams in this league. "They'll be quite a few teams competing for those top six places at the end of the season and we really feel we'll be part of that but we can't concede the easy goals like we have done today."

Sheffield United 0 Huddersfield Town 3 (Attendance: 17,373 )
Blades Line-up : Simonsen, Lowton, Williams, Maguire, Collins, Doyle, Williamson (McDonald 45), Flynn (Mendez-Laing 72), Quinn, Cresswell, Porter (Evans 45).
Man of The Match: Stephen Quinn.
Scunthorpe Line-up: Bennett, Woods, McCombe, Kay, Gobern, Ward, Johnson, Arfield (Robinson 68), Lee, Novak (Rhodes 72), Hunt.
Referee: Graham Salisbury (Lancashire).
Lee Novak scored twice as Huddersfield extended their unbeaten run to 33 league games with a 3-0 win at Sheffield United. Marcus Williams made his debut for United at left-back after signing on an emergency loan. Lee Williamson returned to the side in midfield and Ryan Flynn was on the wing in a 4-4-2 formation. Oscar Gobern returned to the Hudderfield side, and Damien Johnson on his second loan spell from Plymouth Argyle was in the starting eleven. Both sides had early chances, Richard Cresswell tested goalkeeper Ian Bennett with a low snapshot after three minutes, receiving a pass from Neill Collins down the left flank. Cresswell had another effort minutes later in almost identical circumstances when Jack Hunt was disposed just inside the United half. Again he cut inside Jamie McCombe before trying his luck with a right-footed shot, but this time the striker screwed it badly wide.
The visitors went very close to opening the scoring through a long clearance from keeper Bennett which found the head of Alan Lee on the edge of the penalty area and his flick was helped on by strike partner Novak into the path of Gobern, who drove a low shot just wide of the near post from 20 yards.
United midfielder Lee Williamson tried to deftly chip Bennett just before the quarter hour mark only to see his attempt land on the top of the netting. At the other end, Novak volleyed towards goal his effort deflecting over the crossbar. Just as the game looked to be settling down, the visitors took the lead. Lee run infield after collecting a header from Scott Arfield before squaring a pass to the left for Danny Ward, the winger looked up and blasted a powerful shot towards goal from 25 yards out that United goalkeeper Steve Simonsen could not handle, with Novak followed up and slide the rebound underneath the recovering Lane keeper.
The Huddersfield defence saw off a quick-fire United free-kick delivered into the area from Stephen Quinn before continuing to attack the Blades goal and went close to a second goal after 27 minutes. Callum Woods collected a pass before crossing right onto the head of Lee, who forced Simonsen to save his goal-bound header. United then created their best chance when Matthew Lowton got away down the left edge of Huddersfield's penalty area, his pull back was perfectly into the path of Chris Porter, but the Blades striker incredibly placed his shot wide from just ten yards out. Within seconds, the Terriers had doubled their lead. From a free-kick, Williamson failed to clear and Arfield's volley back across goal saw Novak react the quickest to beat Simonsen from close range. It go even worse minutes later, Arfield won a corner down the right side, allowing Ward to swing a pacey cross towards the back post where Oscar Gobern was on hand to outmuscle his marker and make it 3-0 to the visitors. A matter of inches prevented the Blades from conceding a fourth before the break when another Ward set-piece was met by Novak but Williams cleared off the line at the back post.
Talk was of a change in players and United manager Danny Wilson made a double change for the
start of the second half with Ched Evans and midfielder Kevin McDonald replacing Porter and Williamson. Evans was immediately into the action, winning a free-kick from McCombe on the edge of the box, the striker picked himself up and tested Bennett to his left side with a low effort. Then, McCombe did enough to put off Cresswell who fired wide from a very acute angle. Evans and McDonald both had shots blocked in good areas and a excellent move involving McDonald and Flynn resulted in Lowton curling just wide with his left foot. A powerful header from Collins put Evans in the clear and gave United their best chance so far. The welshman avoided McCombe's challenge but was forced onto his weaker left foot and his subsequent shot was saved by the legs keeper United made their final substitution with Flynn replaced by Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. Bennett got down to his right side to push a decent effort from central McDonald wide of goal. Many of the Lane faithful started to make their exit with only a few minutes remaining resigned to the first defeat of the season. In the three minutes of added time Bennett pushed away a good strike from Cresswell after trickery from Mendez-Laing down the right.
Blades Player Performance Ratings v. Huddersfield: Simonsen 5 , Lowton 7 , Williams 7 , Maguire 6 , Collins 6 , Doyle 5 , Williamson 5 , McDonald 6 , Flynn 5 , Mendez-Laing 6 , Quinn 7 , Cresswell 6 , Porter 5 , Evans 6 .

Danny Wilson was delighted after Sheffield United came from behind to extend their unbeaten run with a 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe.
The Blades looked in trouble in the first half against their bogey team who they had not beaten in their previous six attempts.
Striker Chris Dagnall fired Scunthorpe into the lead on the stroke of half time with a brilliant solo effort, but substitute Ched Evans equalised in the 77th minute with an overhead kick from close range.
"We can't be too disappointed to come away from home and get a point," said Wilson. "But the way the game panned out in the second half I did think we could have forced it a bit more.
"We had a lot of pressure but too many times our final ball wasn't good enough. I didn't see the incident which led to their player being sent off but the fourth official said it was for a dangerous challenge.
"I did see the goal that Dagnall scored to put Scunthorpe in front and I'm sure he will think of it as one of his best but from our point of view it was a woeful one to concede. In the second half Scunthorpe battened down the hatches and defended for their lives."

Scunthorpe United 1 Sheffield United 1 (Attendance: 6,047 )
Blades Line-up : Simonsen, Lowton, Jean-Francois, Collins, Maguire, Doyle, McAllister (Williamson 38), Mendez-Laing (Tonne 57), Quinn, Cresswell, Porter (Evans 64).
Man of The Match: Ched Evans.
Scunthorpe Line-up: Johnstone, Wright, Nolan, Togwell, Ryan (M. Duffy 61), Dagnall, Mozika, Norwood (Thompson 71), Reid, Barcham, S. Duffy.
Sent-Off: Barcham 25.
Referee: Pat Miller (Bedfordshire).
Substitute Ched Evans preserved Sheffield United's unbeaten record with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Scunthorpe. Danny Wilson stayed with the same side that beat Bury last weekend. Striker Evans returned to the squad with a place on the bench. The Iron made three changes going into the fixture with Shane Duffy and goalkeeper Sam Johnstone coming into the first eleven for their debuts. Oliver Norwood returned to the team replacing the suspended Bobby Grant.
The match started with just over 2000 unitedites in the crowd to support their team. The first chance went to the home side after eight minutes, a out-swinging cross from Eddie Nolan caused confusion between Neill Collins and goalkeeper Steve Simonsen and somehow found its way to Chris Dagnall and presented the striker with a volley in from a few yards out, but he was unable to keep his shot down and from close range hit the bar.
The same player could have broke the deadlock again five minutes later but his left footed volley on the turn, from the edge of the box could only end up the wrong side of the post and into the side netting. A Stephen Quinn corner caused problems for the Scunthorpe defence but Collins was inches away from connecting with a header. Damien Mozika had the Iron's next chance when receiving the ball in the centre of the pitch, he drove forward towards the edge of the box. But just before reaching the box the midfielder smashed an effort from 25 yards towards Simonsen's right hand corner with the keeper pushing the ball round the post for a corner.
Despite the Iron's dominance they were dealt a huge blow after 25 minutes. A challenge between Michael Doyle and Andy Barcham saw the Scunthorpe winger go in hard with a rash challenge on the Blades midfielder, with the referee deeming the challenge bad enough for a straight red card and leaving the hosts to play with 10 men for the next hour.
Not long after, United received their first yellow card of the match when David McAllister was penalised for a late challenge on Mozika in the centre. This prompted United manager Wilson to make the first substitution when Lee Williamson came on for the cautioned McAllister with seven minutes remaining of the first half.
Simonsen was called into action with three minutes left of the half to keep the scores level. Another flowing move saw the Iron make their way up from the back eventually making its way to Norwood on the edge of the box. Receiving the ball on his right he whipped his shot first time towards the far corner, but was unable to beat the Blades keeper whose fingertips knocked the ball over for a corner.
The hosts had been the better side it the half and scored just before the half time whistle. Norwood played the ball towards Dagnall midway through the Blades half, Harry Maguire, Collins and Doyle backed off when any sort of challenge would have stopped the run, but it never came and the striker curled a right footed effort past Simonsen into the bottom corner, much to the fury of the keeper.
United started the second half the better of the two sides and had an early chance courtesy of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. A powerful run from the 19-year-old down the right hand side saw him beat two opponents before entering the box and receiving the ball from Quinn. He shot though crashing against the post after toe poking the ball from four yards out.
The Blades made their second substitution of the match ten minutes into the second half with Erik Tonne entering the game at the expense of Mendez Laing. Doyle became the next man in the referee's book when he was carded for a foul on Dagnall mid way through the United half. Evans became the third and final player brought on by the Blades with the striker replacing Chris Porter up front.
Richard Cresswell missed a golden opportunity to draw level in the 70th minute. A driving run from Quinn down the middle ended with the Irishman crossing for Cresswell wide on the right. After deceiving the goalkeeper, the striker could not make contact with the ball and went out for a throw in. However with United's next chance they made the game 1-1. A bustling run down the right from Matthew Lowton eventually ended with the full-back crossing a dangerous ball into the box. Cresswell went for the ball, but a deflection from Shane Duffy saw the ball end at the feet of Evans who after failing to control the ball first time swung acrobatically at his second effort stunningly smashing the ball past the onrushing Johnstone.
Only the bar kept the Iron level with eight minutes to go. An in-swinging ball from Quinn on the right evaded all the players in the centre however did not evade Doyle at the back post whose header back towards goal could only hit the bar before going back into play. No one though able to pick the ball up and score from the rebound.
With the last kick of the game United thought they had snatched all three points. A Quinn deflected cross on the left made its way towards Johnstone's goal and with the keeper only able to tip onto the crossbar the ball fell loose into the box. With no keeper in the net it took heroic defending from Paul Reid on the line to keep any Blades player from netting and getting the whole three points. Overall though this was a point gained and puts United at the top of the division.
Blades Player Performance Ratings v. Scunthorpe: Simonsen 7 , Lowton 7 , Jean-Francois 7 , Collins 6 , Maguire 6 , Doyle 7 , McAllister 6 , Williamson 6 , Mendez-Laing 7 , Tonne 6 Quinn 7 , Cresswell 6 , Porter 6 , Evans 7 .

United boss Danny Wilson believes there is plenty more to come from his side after their 4-0 win at home to Bury. The Blades extended their unbeaten league start following goals from Chris Porter, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Matt Lowton and substitute Erik Tonne. "We were in command for large parts of the game. We've got slightly better in the games we've played. We're still not exactly where we want to be and I don't think we will be for a long time," said Wilson. "I still feel that we've got a lot of work to do in certain areas but when you win 4-0 at home you can't have too much to complain about." Wilson also pointed out that Porter is not yet playing to his full potential. He added: "He is nowhere near yet, by his own admission. He is still rusty at times and he needs to one his fitness." Wilson also added that he is still hopeful of signing Rangers duo John Fleck and Kyle Hutton on loan after an administrative problem prevented the deal from going through before the transfer window closed.

Sheffield United 4 Bury 0 (Attendance: 17,956 )
Blades Line-up : Simonsen, Lowton, Jean-Francois, Collins, Maguire, Doyle, McAllister, Mendez-Laing (Flynn 73), Quinn (Williamson 83), Porter (Tonne 81), Cresswell.
Man of The Match: Stephen Quinn.
Bury Line-up: Belford, Picken, Skarz, Sweeney, Worrall (Haworth 79), Bishop, M. Jones, Coke, Sodje, Eastham, Byrne (Harrad 70).
Referee: Eddie Ilderton ( Tyne & Wear).
Goals from Chris Porter, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Matt Lowton and Erik Tonne gave Sheffield United a 4-0 win at home to Bury.
There was a couple of changes to the starting line-up for United, David McAllister replaced the injured Nick Montgomery, and Mendez-Laing got the nod ahead of Ryan Flynn, who dropped to the bench. It was a 4-4-2 formation with Richard Cresswell and Chris Porter leading the Blades attack. Porter had the first real chance of the match on 11 minutes, after picking up the ball on the left of the 18 yard box with David Worrall staying close. His shot rolled in front of Bury goalkeeper Cameron Belford and past the far post. Neill Collins got up well to get his head to a Stephen Quinn corner on 16 minutes, but he headed over the bar.
A minute the later the visitors had a chance when a dangerous cross from Michael Jones on the right rolled just that bit too far for debutant Giles Coke. Winger Mendez-Laing tried his luck from the edge of the box for United moments later, but his low shot was collected by Belford.
A Quinn curling free kick from 30 yards out brought an important save from Bury keeper Belford at his top right hand corner. Harry Maguire got on the end of another Quinn corner on 24 minutes but headed wide of the left post. Shakers midfielder Worrall threaded a ball through to Andy Bishop who was through on goal before he passed the ball in front of Coke, but he ball rolled into the hands of United goalkeeper Steve Simonsen.
The Blades took the lead with three minutes remaining before the half time interval. A shot from Mendez-Laing on the edge of the box was saved by Belford, but the resulting scramble in front of goal saw the ball fell to Porter who slotted in from close range.
Mike Jones looked close to equalising for Bury just before the break after Worrall had cut inside with the ball before squaring the ball to him. Midfield man Jones turned and shot, sending the ball wide of the right post.
But straight after the half-time break United added a second after Mendez-Laing sent in a cross from the right which Belford met at the near post and seemed to put in his own net. The Blades were in complete control now and Bury had no answers to offer. After 71 minutes United made it 3-0. A shot from Porter on the right of the box was saved but went straight into Lowton's path, and he had the easy task of slotting home in front of the Shoreham Kop. United manager Danny Wilson made a slight adjustment to his side after the goal with Ryan Flynn coming on for Mendez-Laing in a straight swap. Hopes of any late consolation goal for the Shakers disappeared on 80 minutes when a Jones free kick curled over the bar. Shortly after United brought on Tonne on for Porter and Lee Williamson on for Quinn who received a standing ovation as he left the field. Quinn had moments earlier showed some Tony Currie type touches as he toyed and showboated in front of the Kop and hopeless Bury defenders, much to the delight of the Kop as United piled on even more pressure for a fourth goal.
The final goal came with six minute remaining when a loose ball from a Williamson corner fell to Tonne who flicked the ball past Belford to complete the rout. Three minutes of added time brought no more goals, but the visitors had been outplayed and outclassed by a United side with their eyes firmly fixed on promotion. And from what we have seen so far in this division, it looks like nobody is going to stop them!
