28th November Kevin Blackwell admits his heart could not stand too many finishes like the drama at Ashton Gate after United beat Bristol City 3-2.

The five minutes added on for stoppages at the end of the game saw Alvaro Saborio cap a strong City fightback with an equaliser that seemed to have earned them a point.

But with almost the last kick of the game Darius Henderson completed his first ever hat-trick and it was United's fans who left the ground celebrating.

"I don't want too many finishes like that - unless they all go my way," said Blackwell.

"When I was at Leeds United we were 3-0 down at Southampton and won 4-3 so it isn't the first time I've experienced this feeling.

"When City equalised I thought we had done everything right except win. Then Darius scored and the mood was transformed again.

"I think we deserved it. I still haven't been able to put out the same side in successive games this season, but our injury problems are easing and with a bit of luck it could happen next week."

Henderson's first goal on the half hour was controversial as a linesman was flagging for offside against a team-mate when his low shot beat Dean Gerken.

Referee Andrew Hall consulted his assistant and then awarded the goal, a decision which saw Lee Johnson booked for dissent after carrying City's protests too far.

A mistake by Jamie McCombe allowed Jamie Ward to set up Henderson for his second on 33 minutes, a close-range shot that went in off the crossbar.

City stepped up their game after the interval and replied when skipper Louis Carey headed home Paul Hartley's 53rd minute free-kick.

When Saborio shot home from 12 yards in a crowded box it seemed the home side's improvement would be rewarded.

But Henderson was allowed space to complete his treble with a shot from a narrow angle, leaving home boss Gary Johnson perplexed by his side's first home defeat.

A hat-trick from Darius Henderson gave Sheffield United a 3-2 win at Ashton Gate to shatter Bristol City's 11-month unbeaten home record.
Blades manager Kevin Blackwell gave a debut to goalkeeper Carl Ikeme after he had signed on loan from Wolves, whilst there were two other changes with Nick Montgomery and Henderson returning. United lined up with a 4-5-1 formation with Jamie Ward and Stephen Quinn supporting Henderson from the wide areas and Lee Williamson in an advanced position with James Harper in a deep midfield position.
The home side employed a 4-3-3 formation with Evander Sno moving forward to support Danny Haynes and Nicky Maynard in attack while Lee Johnson was brought in to replace Lewin Nyatanga.
Early chances came and went for Marvin Elliott and Danny Haynes, who both tried to test Ikeme. Henderson saw two shots blocked at the other end and then Dean Gerken did well to hold on to a low effort from Ward. The opener came on the half-hour mark and controversially so. Matthew Kilgallon's raking cross was controlled by Henderson and then half-volleyed past Gerken's diving body for the first goal of the afternoon.
Celebrations were briefly cut short by the assistant referee's flag on the far side and official Andy Hall went across for discussions about the reasons behind the apparent infringement. After plenty of deliberation, the referee signalled to allow the goal.
No sooner had United taken the lead then they were gifted a second. Jamie McCombe's wayward pass fell straight to Ward, who advanced in a two-on-one situation and his cross was comfortably swept into the net by Henderson.
McCombe almost made amends immediately but his flicked header from a Paul Hartley free kick looped into Ikeme's waiting arms. Elliott's 30-yard thunderbolt tested Ikeme again and then when the Blades keeper dropped Jamie McAllister's cross a grounded Danny Haynes lashed the ball into the side-netting.
On the stroke of half-time Sno sent Haynes racing clear down the left but the striker slipped at the vital moment as he tried to cut back inside Kyle Walker, the recovering Blades defender. Eventually Haynes picked out defender Sno on the edge of the box only for his low shot to flash wide.
The Robins needed a strong start to the second half and it was almost perfect when Sno's pass put Lee Johnson who advanced on Ikeme and watched his low shot ricochet back off the keeper's legs as he attempted a nutmeg. The home side were given a lifeline when Hartley's in-swinging free kick on 53 minutes found skipper Carey at the front post and his bullet header flashed into the top corner.

The home side were now in the ascendancy and looked to be drawing level when Maynard latched on to Haynes' headed flick-on. The former Crewe striker looked odds on to score but once again Ikeme made an excellent save with his body.

Another chance came the Robins way on 67 minutes as Carey's floated cross picked out Haynes in the middle. The forward wrestled got beyond two defenders but not many get beyond Chris Morgan and his block diverted the ball away to safety.
There was still time for drama as the game headed into five added on minutes. Costa Rican substitute Álvaro Saborio looked to have saved the Robins when he latched on to the ball in a penalty box scramble to slot the ball past Ikeme. But straight from the kick-off, Henderson latched on to a pass from Quinn and added to his two first-half strikes with a cool finish across goalkeeper Dean Gerken. A performance which typifies the never say die determination of the Blades. Contrast our performance with the other team in Sheffield who were in the process of being humiliated at home, and it goes without saying every Unitedite should be proud of their manager and team. Up the Blades!

21st November Manager Kevin Blackwell was happy with his players, while Posh boss Mark Cooper felt his side were unlucky to lose after going down 1-0 at Bramall Lane. Henri Camara marked his full debut for the Blades with the only goal of the game to end Sheffield United's run of eight matches without a win.

Peterborough wasted a great chance to earn a draw when George Boyd saw his penalty saved by Mark Bunn.

Blackwell was delighted for his players after they ended their long winless run.

"I thought they all acquitted themselves very well," said Blackwell.

"I give credit to the lads, especially the likes of Lee Williamson, Henri Camara and Jamie Ward who've all only recently returned to action. We knew they were going to tire."

Blackwell was also delighted with the performance of penalty-saving goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

"Bunny's had it tough lately because he's found out how difficult it is to play for a big club, but I thought he put in an accomplished performance. I'm delighted for him because he's a smashing lad.

United finally ended their poor run of form with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Peterborough at Bramall Lane in pouring rain and windy conditions.
Manager Kevin Blackwell handed a debut to Henri Camera in place of suspended Darious Henderson. Lee Williamson made his debut in a side which saw four changes. Chris Morgan returned from his one-match ban and Mark Bunn was back in goal. New Peterborough manager Mark Cooper named George Boyd as his captain with starts for Scott Griffiths, Lee Frecklington and Gabriel Zakuani. The Blades made most of the early running as expected, but the first 10 minutes passed without any major incident. Kyle Walker went down in the 18 yard box after a challenge from Scott Griffiths after nine minutes but the referee rightly waved play to continue. Some nervy defending from United allowed Boyd to nip in minutes later, and his low drive from 20-yards was close to breaking the deadlock, rolling just past the post. The impressive Boyd then saw a left-foot shot drift wide of the target from just inside the box as the visitors tried to play some passing football in the final third. Chris Whelpdale sent a rasping left-foot shot over the crossbar from 25-yards on 23 minutes, after Boyd had robbed the ball from James Harper. Stephen Quinn saw a free-kick deflect over the bar via the wall on 26 minutes after Ryan Bennett was penalised for a foul on Camara and from the resulting set-piece, the visitors had a very lucky escape. A well-worked corner from Jamie Ward was pulled back into the path of Ched Evans whose powerful drive rebounded off the underside of the crossbar before defender Charlie Lee hacked the ball to safety. At the other end, a superb cross field pass from Griffiths picked out Craig Mackail-Smith, but his touch was too heavy and Matt Kilgallon got across to make the tackle. Quinn was denied by Posh goalkeeper Joe Lewis moments later after Bennett had miss-read the flight of the ball as it was played forward. A fierce snap-shot from Aaron Mclean flew over the crossbar on 37 minutes after a good lay-off from French midfielder Toumani Diagouraga.  But the deadlock was broken two minutes before the break when Walker was able to get to the by-line and cut the ball back for Evans, his shot from close range was saved by Lewis and Camara was on hand to slot home the rebound. Just before the half-time whistle  there was still time for Camara to have two efforts blocked by the legs of Bennett and after the visitors had half-cleared a corner, Morgan's cross was headed just wide by Andrew Davies.
Neither side made any changes at the interval as Posh set about trying to get back into the game following Camara's goal just before the break. Camara headed over at the back post just after the break after an inviting centre from Williamson. Then, a cross from Griffiths managed to elude Boyd and Mackail-Smith in the six-yard box as Peterborough went on the attack when Killgallon made an error and McLean’s deflected effort was saved by goalkeeper Bunn. Just before the hour mark, Mackail-Smith tricked his way into the area after a good through ball from Mclean, but his left-footed effort was claimed by a diving Bunn. Chances were definitely coming for Posh, another excellent centre from Griffiths this time picked out Mackail-Smith, but he couldn't divert his header goalwards. The Lane faithful were beginning to get a bit restless with their team after a period of giving the ball away and the perpetual long ball tactics which were making  it very frustrating viewing, especially knowing that their opponents were the side routed at the bottom of the table. With 25 minutes reaming the visitors made their first change when midfield man Shaun Batt replaced Whelpdale. A neat back-heel from Mclean picked out the lively Mackail-Smith on 66 minutes but Davies dragged him down and the referee pointed to the spot. Boyd telegraphed his penalty just to the left of Bunn and he pushed the ball away. The visitors continued playing some excellent football and after a quick lay-off from Mackail-Smith, Boyd was denied once again by the excellent Bunn. Despite the setback of the missed penalty, it was all one-way traffic as Posh piled forward in search of the equalising goal. With the rain pouring down Blackwell made a substitution with Keith Treacy replacing Camera. Then Williamson was replaced by Ryan France, and Ward with Kyel Reid. Harper completely fluffed a good chance with five minutes to go miss-kicking his chance. It was all very frustrating for the Blades fans and many started streaming away well before the end. As the game moved into the final 15 minutes, the visitors were still pressing forward and there were some unwelcome boos coming from the terraces, clearly upset at the long ball tactics from the Blades.  With three minutes remaing the visitors made another substitution, Josh Simpson was introduced in place of Diagouraga. Batt fired just inches past the post in stoppage time after a slip from Bunn which had the home faithful holding their breaths. In the end Camera’s goal proved to be the winner for United and it is three points gained but it was not nice viewing and remember our opponents were the side at the bottom of the league. Peterborough will still be relegated but can count themselves unlucky not to take something from today’s game, particularly after their dominant second half display.

Two penalties from Darius Henderson ensured that the Blades salvage a point at Oakwell. United's injury and suspension decimated side saw only two changes, but there were surprises aplenty from manager Kevin Blackwell. Kyle Walker recovered to continue at right-back, Jonathan Fortune was handed a debut and Jamie Ward returned to add pace to the attack. Henderson was handed the captain's armband in the absence of the suspended Chris Morgan, whilst full-back Derek Geary was named on the bench for the first time following his lengthy recovery from a knee problem. The Blades lined up with a 4-4-2 formation with Matt Kilgallon remaining at left-back and Fortune partnering Andrew Davies in the centre of defence. Keith Treacy reverted to the left of midfield with Ward on the right. Barnsley manager Mark Robins was forced into one change from the side that beat Peterborough United with Stephen Foster missing the game through suspension. In came Rob Kozluk to face his former employers while Ryan Shotton switched into the middle of the back four.
On a freezing evening it was the home side which had the first chance. Jon Macken turned Kozluk's cross goal-ward but the ball looped a foot or so over Ian Bennett's crossbar. United almost grabbed an early lead when Walker's long throw somehow made its way through to Ward at the back post but a combination of Darren Moore and goalkeeper Luke Steele smothered his shot away. Barnsley were quickly on the counter and Anderson de Silva picked out a pass to put Daniel Bogdanovic clean through on Bennett's goal but Killgallon appeared from nowhere to block the Maltese striker's shot away from the bottom corner.
Barnsley went even closer from Adam Hammill's corner as Bennett tried to grab the ball and it looped back off the underside of the bar and away. Attacking midfielder Hammill was again the creator for the home side on 13 minutes, when his cross from the left had the Blades chasing shadows and Anderson did everything right with his header only to be denied by Bennett's outstanding save. United fired their first real warning shot on 16 minutes when Ched Evans did well to evade Shotton before drilling the ball a foot or so wide of the post from 25 yards out and then Henderson failed to get enough purchase on a diagonal cross from Kilgallon. Reds frontman Bogdanovic  let fly from 20 yards with a well-struck volley that Bennett somehow managed to push away from the top corner. United should have been in front a minute later when Treacey's cross beat the Barnsley defence and gave Henderson a free header about eight yards out but the Blades skipper could not connect with the ball. Blades defender was fortunate just moments later after clashing with Macken deep in the United half. Both players came together and Davies pushed his head at the Barnsley players’ head. The referee could have taken a negative view of the Blades defenders' actions, and he was lucky to get away with just a warning. Bennett came to United rescue yet again on 25 minutes as a scramble in the Blades are from Macken's knock back ended with Hugo Colace smashing the ball goal-ward but the United  keeper did wonderfully well to parry it away. James Harper's shot was deflected wide and Walker's run and cross from the right caused problems before Anderson cleared. Evans had Barnsley scrambling on 33 minutes as his deep cross almost caught out the Reds but Moore was in the right place to make a telling challenge on James Harper at the back post. Harper then fired towards goal two minutes later but his shot took a deflection and flew wide of the mark. Barnsley defender Shotton picked up a yellow card on 43 minutes after a sliding challenge of Kilgallon left the Blades defender in agony. Kilgallon hobbled off and although he did come back on the field it was obvious that the defender could not continue. Just before the half-time whistle Kilgallon was replaced by Geary and he received a loud cheer from the travelling Unitedites. United's injury hit season took another twist at half time with keeper Bennett was replaced by Mark Bunn. Shot stopper Bennett had picked up a hand injury in the first half.  Evans thought he had broken through Barnsley on 52 minutes as he raced onto Henderson's pass but the striker was denied a shot at goal by Carl Dickinson's diving tackle. Nine minutes into the second half Barnsley when ahead.  Colace picked the perfect pass to open United wide open and put Anderson free in the area. The Brazilian had time to pick his spot and hammered the ball past Bunn and into the far top corner. The Blades were almost on level terms just two minutes later as Treacy beat three players on the left side before shooting against the base of Steele's near post and from the rebound the ball dropped to Ward but Moore blocked the striker's goal-bound effort. Bogdanovic brought a fine stop from Bunn on 55 minutes as his lob looked to be heading for the top corner. Dickinson then provided an opportunity for Macken seconds later with a cross from the left but the Barnsley front man could not turn the ball past Bunn from ten yards out. The Reds' pressure was forcing the Blades back time and time again. Colace crossed well for Bogdanovic on 59 minutes but the striker put his header wide of the post. Barnsley had created and missed several opportunities and were made to pay when their defence failed to deal with the quick reactions of Evans, who, the referee deemed, had been brought down by Steele. After protests subsided, Henderson took responsibility and smashed home the penalty in front of the Unitedites behind the goal. Macken should he put the home side back in front on 63 minutes when he left the United defence standing to meet Dickinson's free kick on the penalty spot but his header dropped wide of Bunn's goal. Three minutes later, Hammill raced at the Blades defence only to shoot straight at Bunn. But with 16 minutes remaining the Reds regained their lead.  Macken got the better of Geary and Davies and his cross was bungled over the line by Bogdanovic from close range. Henderson was booked for a clash with Anderson. It was a costly booking and now means he misses United’s next match. With time running out Blackwell threw on Henri Camara for Treacy. Walker took on both Dickinson and Hammill down the right and the latter clattered into the Blades player inside the Barnsley 18 yard box. The referee rightly pointed to the spot and Henderson smashed home the penalty to Steele's right hand side. United were content with a point and fell deeper into their half. With two minutes remaining Nathan Doyle let fly from 30 yards but the ball went wide of the post.

Blades Player Performance Ratings v. Barnsley: Bennett 7, Bunn 6, Kilgallon 6, Geary 7, Walker 7, Davies 6, Fortune 6, Harper 6, Quinn 6, Treacy 6, Camara 6, Ward 7, Evans 6, Henderson 7.

5th November United could be without 14 players for the clash with Barnsley and Kevin Blackwell says he has never known anything like it. Gary Naysmith, Derek Geary, Andrew Davies, Andrew Taylor, Richard Cresswell, Jamie Ward, Nick Montgomery, Lee Williamson and Paddy Kenny all missed Monday's home game against Newcastle. Kyle Walker also limped off and is likely to miss the trip to Oakwell with an ankle injury while skipper Chris Morgan is suspended after receiving his fifth booking of the season. Blackwell said: "I've never known a season like it. There will be something like 14 players on the sidelines out of a squad of 25 and that just tells you how stretched we are. "We just need to have a bit of luck. I don't think there's anything else wrong."

3rd November Manager Kevin Blackwell believes all his side needs to halt their slide down the Championship table is a little bit of luck. The Blades' squad has been left wafer thin by a catalogue of injuries in recent weeks, while Blackwell also believes some controversial refereeing decisions have gone against his side.

Blackwell said: "There's nothing more you can do, but keep playing like we did against Newcastle and keep working hard and hopefully at some point certain decisions will go your way."We've had some harsh decisions go against us in the last few weeks, but if my players keep playing like that, there's not much wrong." Blackwell believes Monday night's 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle hinged on referee Kevin Friend's decision to wave play on after Kevin Nolan's thumping challenge on Blades defender Kyle Walker directly led to Ryan Taylor's shot, which was deflected in off home skipper Chris Morgan. The Blades boss added: "The referee missed a crucial decision on Kyle Walker. Those decisions change games and that seems to happen when the chips are down.

An unlucky deflection condemned Sheffield United to a 0-1 defeat against Newcastle at Bramall Lane. United with an ever growing injury list made more changes to the side with Jordan Stewart and Andrew Davies returning to the starting XI with Davies partnering Chris Morgan in central defence and Matt Kilgallon lined up at left-back with Stewart ahead of him and Keith Treacy switching to the right wing. Newcastle welcomed back Fabricio Coloccini and Danny Simpson into his starting line-up. Hungarain Tamas Kadar continued at the centre of the defence which meant Ryan Taylor moving into midfield. Alan Smith returned from suspension to make the four-man midfield alongside Nicky Butt and Jonas Gutierrez. There was a period of applause before kick-off in memory of ex Blade and Magpie Keith Kettleborough, who passed away earlier on the day of the game. The game kicked off with the Blades attacking the Shoreham Kop. United had the brighter start when Stephen Quinn sent a cross into the penalty area from a dead-ball situation on the left and Andy Carroll's headed clear of danger. Then Ched Evan delivered a low pass into the path of Darius Henderson, peeling off the shoulder of Fabricio Coloccini, and drags a left-footed strike wide of the far post from just 10 yards out. United continued to have the better of the chances, Stewart's cross somehow arrives at the feet of Henderson, unmarked six yards out. The Lane frontman sets up Treacy, but he fires over the crossbar from 12 yards out. There were some feisty challenges which resulted in Morgan picking up a booking, for a foul on Carroll, who was the next to be shown a yellow card after fouling Kilgallon. Just before the break Kyle Walker rob Ryan Taylor of the ball and the Magpies midfielder tugs on Walkers’ shirt and picks up a booking. Keith Treacy fires low across goal but Smith is first on the scene to avert the threat with a clearance. At the start of the second half, Taylor fouls Walker again but get away with a stern warning.  Kevin Nolan looks to catch Blade goalkeeper Ian Bennett off his line with a delicate chip from 10 yards but the keeper to get the ball away from danger. Then, Taylor's centre is only half cleared and he serves up a floated delivery and Magpies striker Carroll is only denied an opener when his header brushes the base of the post and bounces wide. Two minutes later the visitors take the lead. Nolan pinches the ball from Walker 25 yards out with a thumping tackle allowing Taylor a sight of goal. The midfielder steadies before seeing vicious strike cannon off Morgan and wrong foot Bennett with the ball nestling in the bottom corner in front of the Kop. With 30 minutes remaining Walker who was injured in the Nolan tacke moments earlier, is replaced by Ryan France. An Evans free-kick is cleared by Butt and, on 73 minutes, Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper spreads his body to keep out Henderson's point-blank effort from six yards out after Treacy's low cross had fell favourably for the Lane striker. Again Harper is called into action as he falls low to smother Evans drilled free-kick from 25 yards. Manager Kevin Blackwell then used his third and final change for the last 15 minutes with Henri Camara taking over from Evans.  The Magpies also make a switch with striker Nile Ranger replacing Danny Simpson and soon after Jonas Gutierrez makes way for Marlon Harewood who is roundly booed by the Lane faithful as he enters the fray. After 88 minutes, Treacy's left-wing swinger looks for a moment as if it could creep under Harper's crossbar, but the ball just clears the crossbar and the Blades looked for a penalty when Ranger went through the back of Henderson in the final minute of the match. Five minutes were added and Treacy's low blast is blocked by Harpers legs after Quinn's right-wing cross had found its way to the Irishman's unmarked inside the 18 yard box. United pile forward with time running out and defender Davies joins the front players. Henderson storms onto Davies' headed flick, but again Harper thwarts the Blades with a point-blank stop. But it was not to be tonight. United were unlucky not to get something from this encounter, a deflected goal a penalty claim which somehow was ignored and some inspirational goalkeeping means United have lost their last four matches and, drop to a mid-table position.
