August Neil Warnock has failed in his attempt to
bring in a striker before the transfer window closed today. Several
players had been mentioned, but moments after the deadline had passed
it was revealed that even with the veil of secrecy that had been
in place over the last few days; that the blades boss had been unable
to add to the current squad. He said: "Naturally, I am disappointed,
but I have a good squad and am still quite confident of bringing
someone in on loan before our match with Ipswich in ten days time."
31st August Jonathan Forte has joined Doncaster Rovers on a month's loan.
The 19-year-old striker moves to Belle Vue in search of regular
first team football and to further his development. Blades boss
Neil Warnock said: "There was significant interest in him but
Jon considered the location when he made his choice and we are pleased
to be able to help Doncaster out. Additionally, being so close at
hand will help us monitor his progress."

August Crewe Alexandra 1
Sheffield United 3 (Attendance: 7,501)
Line-up: Kenny, Bromby, Unsworth, Short, Jagielka, Morgan, Montgomery, Quinn
(Armstrong 82), Gillespie, Shipperley, Kabba (Ifill 77).
Subs Not Used: Kozluk, Tonge, Shaw.
Scorers: Shipperley 15, Quinn 50, Kabba 56.
Man of the Match: Nick Montgomery.
The Blades confirmed their status as
promotion favorites with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra
at Gresty Road today. United dominated from start to finish but
needed second-half goals by Alan Quinn and Steven Kabba to earn
their latest win. A Paddy Kenny blunder in the 16th minute had gifted
the Railwaymen the opportunity of snatching an unlikely point. Stephen
Foster had been the grateful recipient of the Republic of Ireland
international's fumble, a goal which had cancelled out Neil Shipperley's
opener minutes earlier. But it was a matter of time before the Blades
would reclaim their lead and they sauntered to victory in the second
half. United began in menacing fashion with Phil Jagielka, Keith
Gillespie, David Unsworth and Kabba testing Crewe goalkeeper Ross
Turnbull in the opening 10 minutes. With Crewe's defence struggling
to cope, the Blades scored an inevitable opener after 14 minutes.
Jagielka flicked on a right-wing corner and Shipperley was on hand
at the far post to bundle the ball home. The Blades then amazingly
threw their lead away. Kenny Lunt sent in a textbook free-kick delivery
which was fumbled by Kenny. Defender Foster was on hand to nod into
an empty net from two yards out. But if anything, the Crewe goal
made United even more determined and Nick Montgomery hit the side-netting
from 10 yards out while Kabba, who was being allowed plenty of space
in behind the Crewe defence, slashed wide with just Turnbull to
beat. Craig Short then headed wide from six yards out as Crewe somehow
managed to go into the break on level terms. It took four minutes
of the second half for the United to regain the lead. Quinn, who
was outstanding all afternoon on the left wing, was the gleeful
recipient of a Kabba flick-on before beating the statuesque Crewe
defenders and neatly slotting past a stranded Turnbull. An increasingly
bedraggled Crewe went further behind in the 55th minute when Jagielka
nodded a Quinn centre back across goal and Kabba had time to chest
down and power home from seven yards out. Crewe huffed and puffed
in the final half-hour, with David Vaughan showing neat skill before
sending a 25-yard shot over the bar and Steve Jones saw his close-range
effort well saved by Kenny. But the Blades were a class apart today,
and now the rest of the Division will have noticed that United mean
business this season. The Blades sit proudly on the top of the Championship
with a two point lead.
28th August Blades boss Neil Warnock could stick with front duo Steven
Kabba and Neil Shipperley after their solid display against Coventry
City. But Chris Armstrong and striker Ian Ross could be drafted
into the squad. Ross Turnbull will continue to deputise in the Crewe
goal in place of Ben Williams, who is still struggling with a calf
problem. Gary Roberts could be included in the squad after recovering
from a foot injury but Luke Rodgers is out with an ankle injury.
27th
August Sheffield United
2 Coventry City 1 (Attendance: 17,739)
Line-up: Kenny, Bromby, Unsworth,
Short, Morgan (Gillespie 74), Jagielka, Ifill, Montgomery, Quinn
(Kozluk 90), Shipperley, Kabba (Tonge 80).
Subs Not Used: Barnes, Nalis.
Booked: Short, Morgan.
Scorers: Kabba 27, Unsworth (pen) 90.
Man of the Match: David Unsworth.
David Unsworth made a dream debut for
the Blades as his late winning goal condemned 10-man Coventry City
to a 2-1 defeat. Unsworth struck an unstoppable penalty into the
bottom right in the last minute of the game after Richard Duffy
up-ended Alan Quinn in the 18-yard box. The Sky Blues started the
better and were rewarded with the opener when James Scowcroft fired
home after 24 minutes. But City boss Micky Adams joy was short-lived
as Alan Quinn teed up Steven Kabba to equalise only three minutes
later. Kabba was not even meant to be starting and was only called
in to Warnock's first-team line-up after Danny Webber sustained
a calf injury in the warm-up prior to kick-off. United held all
the aces in the second half and after Matt Heath was sent off for
a second bookable offence, the Sky Blues braced themselves for 30
minutes of intense pressure. Coventry had the edge early on, and
Dele Adebola's brute force and Scowcroft's neat runs from deep helped
gather the momentum for City to open the scoring six minutes before
the half-hour mark. Willo Flood threaded through a neat ball to
Scowcroft who controlled well and unleashed a low drive from just
inside the penalty box into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
United needed a lift and it duly arrived after 27 minutes when Kabba
rifled home the equaliser. Quinn sent the pacey striker careering
into Coventry penalty box and even though he had plenty to do from
a tight angle, his right-foot hit was exquisite and nestled snugly
into the right-hand corner of the net and in front of the Shoreham
Kop. The Blades were finally in the groove and could have gone in
at the interval in front when Kabba headed over Paul Ifill's cross
in the closing stages of the first half. The Blades set about Coventry
with renewed vigour after the restart with Leigh Bromby forcing
Stephen Bywater into a routine tip over the crossbar, and Ifill's
telling delivery needing to be headed to safety by Coventry centre-back
Robert Page. City did well to stem the United's intense pressure,
but Adams was forced into a major tactical overhaul when Heath was
lured into a needless challenge on Kabba after 70 minutes. As the
centre-back had already being booked for pulling back Neil Shipperley,
the outcome was inevitable and he was shown the red card. The game
was one way traffic as United pressed mercilessly forward and were
deservedly rewarded after Heath's indiscretion just inside his own
box. This had been an excellent display from United with some cracking
performances, especially from Unsworth, Kabba, Quinn and Nick Montgomery.
Its a result which put the Blades back were they belong - at the
top of the Championship.
27th August United have allowed defender Jon Harley to join Burnley.
The 25-year-old Blades defender has signed on loan initially so
he can play in the Clarets' two games over the Bank Holiday weekend.
However, his move will become permanent on Tuesday for a fee of
up to £150,000, depending on appearances. Commenting about
the move; Neil Warnock said: "He didn't have to go but with
us having options in defence, he knew his chances would be restricted,
Burnley wanted him straight away and we didn't feel it was right
to stand in his way because he's a lovely lad and has been an asset
to the squad."
26th August David Unsworth is poised to make his Blades debut against
Coventry City at Bramall Lane. The versatile defender, who signed
a three-year deal earlier in the week, is expected to be one of
several changes manager Neil Warnock will make. Warnock rested several
first-team players in the midweek League Cup win over Boston United,
but will revert to a line-up similar to the one employed in last
week's Championship win over Preston North End. Young striker Ian
Ross, who scored on his debut on Tuesday, could retain his place
in the squad, as could winger Chris Armstrong. Warnock has no new
injury or suspension problems.
23rd
August Sheffield United
1 Boston United 0 (Attendance: 6,014)
Line-up: Barnes, Kozluk (Wright 62), Geary,
Morgan, Bromby, Armstrong, Gillespie (Forte 85), A.Quinn, Ifill,
Ross, Shaw (Mulligan 77)
Subs Not Used: Nix, S.Quinn.
Scorer: Ross 50.
Man of The Match: Paul Ifill.
Ian Ross scored a debut goal to fire the Blades into the
second round of the League Cup with his second-half winner settling
a 1-0 victory over Boston United. The midfielder struck in the 50th
minute, capitalising on a rare good delivery from Keith Gillespie
to give United victory and put Neil Warnock's men into the next
round. The game began in scrappy fashion with neither side able
to impose themselves on a decidedly low-key affair. A frustrated
Alan Quinn blazed a right-footed strike from 35 yards over the bar
as early as the seventh minute but it was not until twenty minutes
later that visiting keeper Nathan Abbey was even tested. Blades
midfielder Paul Ifill forced Abbey into action with a fearsome drive
from 30 yards which was tipped round the post. Ifill was then guilty
of a foul on Boston defender Alan White as the Pilgrims proved a
stubborn side to break down. But, pressure from the Blades finally
told early in the second half; when Gillespie won a corner and from
his cross Ross hammered home from inside the penalty box to give
United the lead. Chris Armstrong should then have doubled the advantage
but was wasteful when presented with the chance to shoot inside
the box before Ifill was unlucky to see a good effort from the edge
of the box parried to safety by Abbey. But still the Blades progress
in to the 2nd Round and thats all that matters. Now back to to more
important matters - promotion.
22nd August Richard Cresswell has snubed the Blades and joined Leeds
United instead. The striker has agreed terms on a four-year deal
and will complete his £1.15m move when he passes a medical.
The Blades had earlier had a £1m bid accepted for the forward,
but Cresswell opted for a switch to Elland Road.
22nd August United have signed defender David Unsworth from Portsmouth.
The 31-year-old has agreed a three-year deal at the Lane, with the
Blades only paying a fee if they go on to win promotion to the Premiership.
Commenting to BBC Radio Sheffield, he said: "I'm dropping out
of the Premiership but just for a season, this club can get promotion
with the squad that is here, I am certain of that. I have been impressed
with what I have seen here."
20th
August Sheffield United
2 Preston North End 1 (Attendance: 20,519)
Line-up: Kenny, Bromby, Harley, Short,
Morgan, Jagielka, Ifill (Gillespie 70), Tonge (Quinn 74), Montgomery,
Shipperley (Shaw 63), Webber
Subs Not Used: Barnes, Kozluk.
Scorers: Shipperley 45, Webber 90.
Man of the Match: Nick Montgomery.
Danny Webber was the hero for the Blades
as his last-gasp strike gave United a victory over Preston at the
Lane. The seconds were ticking away in added time when the pacey
striker got the decisive touch in the penalty area after a Keith
Gillespie free-kick. Neil Shipperley had done the same trick for
United in the first half, his acrobatic strike in the closing seconds
cancelling out the lillywhites' lead. Preston had rocked the Blades
with the opener in the 35th minute when Paul McKenna's superbly
taken free-kick from 30 yards out beat Paddy Kenny in front of the
Shoreham Kop. Blades boss Neil Warnock made two changes after his
side's 2-1 defeat at QPR, drafting in defender Craig Short for his
home debut and bringing Michael Tonge back into midfield, with tonsilitis
victim Lilian Nalis out of action. United were quick to show and
goalkeeper Carlo Nash had to punch clear from a Paul Ifill cross
in the first minute, and they threatened when Webber won a corner
after his left-footed shot was blocked by big defender Claude Davis.
Jon Harley swung in the kick, but Shipperley was adjudged to have
fouled the goalkeeper and the danger was cleared. 'The Ship' as
the big Blades striker is known , was already on the scoresheet
this season after a goal against Burnley, found the target again
when he fired in a right-footed shot which cleared Nash's crossbar
as the Blades pressed for an opener, with Tonge drilling a left-footed
effort wide. Leigh Bromby was another to miss the target, this time
from close range, and there was little to be seen of Preston as
an attacking force until they broke the deadlock. The star performance
of the day must go to Nick Montgomery who's industry throughout
was exceptional as he rushed around the park making all the important
tackles - at least the Blades boss should now take the on-form midfielder
‘off’ the transfer-list as a reward. Shipperley too,
was pressed into more action today than boss Warnock wanted at this
stage of the season, and was taken off after 62 minutes, with Paul
Shaw taking his place. Preston, who had made four changes, saw more
of the action in the second half and in a spell of pressure both
David Nugent and Danny Dichio got in shots, with Kenny saving from
the latter before he was replaced by striker Patrick Agyemang. Warnock
threw on winger Gillespie to replace Ifill with 20 minutes to go,
before Harley's left-foot volley brought a save from Nash. Phil
Jagielka was the next to test the Preston rearguard but his shot
following a free-kick went over the top as the Blades went for a
winner with the minutes ticking down. The midfielder had a chance
to win the game with a good chance from close in after Gillespie's
cross, but he put the ball wide. Then, just as it looked as if Preston
would hold out, Webber stepped in with a dramatic intervention to
seal the points for United and lift the Blades into second spot
in the Championship.
19th August Midfield duo Michael Tonge and Lilian Nalis are both doubtful
for United's home clash with Preston. Tonge has an ankle injury,
while Nalis is struggling with tonsilitis. Craig Short may make
his first competitive start. Preston manager Billy Davies is expected
to make changes after last week's 3-0 home defeat to Reading. Matt
Hill could start after recovering from injury, as could on loan
midfielder David Jones.
16th August Scunthorpe United have finally succeeded in signing striker
Billy Sharp from the Blades. Initially the striker could not agree
personal terms with the Iron but eventually put pen to paper. He
has signed a three-year deal at Glanford Park and the deal could
see Scunthorpe pay up to £100,000 for the frontman depending
on clauses inserted in the transfer.
13th
August Queens Park Rangers
2 Sheffield United 1 (Attendance: 13,497)
Line-up: Kenny, Bromby,
Harley (Short 73), Morgan, Jagielka, Kozluk, Ifill, Nalis (Gillespie
74), Montgomery, Shipperley (Kabba 77), Webber.
Subs Not Used: Quinn, Shaw.
Booked: Bromby 58, Morgan 64, Shipperley 78.
Scorers: Kabba 90.
Man of the Match: Paul Ifill.
Marc Bircham and Stefan Moore were
the scorers as Queens Park Rangers beat United 2-1 and knocked them
off the Championship top spot. Bircham thumped Rangers ahead shortly
after the interval, and young substitute Moore doubled the advantage
in injury-time as Rangers preserved their unbeaten start to the
season at Loftus Road. Substitute Steven Kabba pulled one back for
the Blades with the last kick of the game, before manager Neil Warnock
had to restrain skipper Chris Morgan from confronting Kevin Gallen
at the final whistle. The Blades boss made one change to the side
that overcame Burnley, with Rob Kozluk coming in for Michael Tonge
who did not even make the bench. Neil Shipperley, a goalscorer at
Turf Moor, kept his place in attack alongside Danny Webber with
Warnock continuing his search for a striker to replace the departed
Andy Gray. The Blades fashioned the first attempt on goal when a
mistake from Marcus Bignot allowed Shipperley to feed Paul Ifill,
but the midfielder's angled shot was comfortably gathered by Simon
Royce. Jon Harley's corner then found the head of Shipperley but
the former Crystal Palace forward could not direct the ball goalwards.
Rangers, who seemed content to play on the counter-attack, threatened
when Gallen played in Martin Rowlands, but the winger's low cross
eluded everyone in the penalty area. Gallen then guided a Rowlands
free-kick over the bar as Rangers began to get into the game, and
Leigh Bromby did well to leap between Gallen and Paul Furlong and
head Gareth Ainsworth's cross to safety. Webber looked United's
most potent threat, and he caused mild panic in the home defence
by dancing past Bignot and Georges Santos, only for Danny Shittu
to halt his progress just as he was bearing down on goal. Rangers
suffered a blow just before the break when midfielder Tommy Doherty
limped out of the action and was replaced by Moore who joined Furlong
up front while Gallen dropped into the midfield. The R’s were
first onto the attack after the interval, with Furlong planting
a header over the top from Ainsworth's curling cross. And after
56 minute they went ahead when Moore wriggled clear on the left-hand
side of the area and crossed towards Furlong. The ball was headed
out to the edge of the box, from where Bircham unleashed a superb
first-time volley which flew passed a motionless Paddy Kenny. Webber
could have dragged the Blades level just after the hour mark, but
he failed to connect properly with Nick Montgomery's cross. As the
Blades pressed for a leveller, the lively Moore robbed Lilian Nalis
and burst forward only to hit his shot straight at Kenny. Warnock
made a triple substitution, replacing Harley, Shipperley and Nalis
with Keith Gillespie, Kabba and debutant Craig Short. But it was
Rangers who grabbed the decisive second. As the third official signalled
five minutes of stoppage time, Moore made a run down the right flank
and found Matthew Rose. The left-back tried an ambitious volley
which skewed back to Moore, who controlled the ball on his chest
and fired past Kenny. In the 4th minute of added time, Unted got
a consolation goal. Kenny launched a long kick form nearly the half-way
line which after a scrabble in the Rangers box; the ball fell for
Kabba who found the target from 6 yards out. It had been a dissapointing
showing by the Blades against an ordinary looking Rangers team,
and sees United drop down to 5th position in the Championship.
12th August Neil Shipperley looks set to start his second successive
game for United, despite not being fully match fit after arriving
from Crystal Palace. Defender Craig Short is available after suspension
and will be vying with Chris Morgan and Phil Jagielka for a place.
Neil Warnock confirmed "three or four" of the squad were
carrying knocks, but were expected to be fit for the trip to London.
QPR boss Ian Holloway may hand Aaron Brown his first start for the
club. Brown, who has been with Rangers since last summer but spent
a year out with a broken leg, is in contention to replace injured
winger Lee Cook.
11th August Neil Warnock does not expect to find an instant replacement
for striker Andy Gray. The Blades will bank an initial £750,000
from the sale to Sunderland, rising to £1.1m depending on
appearances, and Warnock will be given the cash to fill the void.
"I had money before Andy's departure and I still can't spend
it," Warnock said. "It's very difficult at the moment.
There's been Cresswell and Morrison and others we've been linked
with, but it's not straightforward. It doesn't matter how much money
you've got, the players just aren't there at the moment. I'm just
grateful I managed to get (Neil) Shipperley signed up," Warnock
added. United are also being linked with a move for Bulgarian striker
Svetoslav Todorov who is currently with Portsmouth.
10th August Andy Gray has left the Blades for a £1.1m move to Sunderland.
The 27-year-old striker has signed a three-year contract with the
Black Cats and will go into their squad for Saturday's home match
against Charlton. The Scot scored 15 goals for the Blades in the
Championship last season and opened his account for this season
with a penalty in Saturday's 4-1 defeat of Leicester City. That
turned out to be his last appearance for United, as he did not play
in the 2-1 win over Burnley yesterday. Afterwards, Warnock admitted
he was resigned to losing Gray. "He wants to play in the Premiership
and you can't really stand in his way," he said.
9th
August Burnley 1 Sheffield
United 2 (Attendance: 11,802)
Line-up: Kenny, Bromby, Harley, Morgan,
Jagielka, Ifill (Gillespie 85), Montgomery, Nalis, Tonge (Kozluk
81), Shipperley, Webber (Kabba 86).
Subs Not Used: Barnes, Quinn.
Booked: Jagielka 52.
Scorers: Shipperley 5, Morgan 40.
Mman of The Match: Danny Webber.
First-half goals from Neil Shipperley and Chris
Morgan were enough for United to make it two wins out of two this
season with a 2-1 victory at Burnley. Shipperley scored his first
Blades goal just four minutes into his first start and Morgan scrappily
added a second before the interval for the Blades, who were without
Sunderland-bound striker Andy Gray. The Clarets hammered away at
United all game long and eventually Ade Akinbiyi pulled one back
in the 71st minute to set up a tense finish. But Neil Warnock's
men, who beat Leicester 4-1 at the weekend, held on to record a
victory to give United a maximun 6 points from their opening two
fixtures. It was an explosive start with Burnley piling forward from
the kick-off and midfielder Micah Hyde shooting wide after an early
spell of pressure. Clarets goalkeeper Brian Jensen was quickly called
into action with a firm block on a powerful Nick Montgomery strike.
But the imposing Danish keeper had little chance when Shipperley
gave the Blades the lead in just the fifth minute. From a Leigh
Bromby throw wide on the right, the ball eventually fell to Danny
Webber who turned left-back Graham Branch and whipped a ball in
to the near post where Shipperley made no mistake from close-range.
Then, from a corner he had earned, Michael Tonge floated the ball
into the box and Morgan's header was punched away by Jensen straight
back into Morgan and the ball bounced past Webber, who tried to
get a touch, and over the line. United were full of running again
after the break and a Paul Ifill cross from the right dropped just
wide of the far post but the Blades had little need for adventure
and were more and more content to soak up all the Clarets could
throw at them. Burnley's first real chance of the second period
came when Noel-Williams knocked wide and Elliott crossed but Akinbiyi
headed straight at goalkeeper Paddy Kenny. As Burnley plugged away,
Webber threatened again for the Blades, collecting Phil Jagielka's
lobbed free-kick on the turn and rifling narrowly wide. Noel-Williams
headed wide again from an Akinbiyi cross but, with 19 minutes left,
the Clarets finally made a breakthrough. Hyde split the Blades defence
with a pass to Sinclair and the defender pulled the ball back sharply
for Noel-Williams, whose low effort was diverted into the goal from
close-range by Akinbiyi. With three minutes left, Garreth O'Connor
forced a low save from Kenny as Burnley pressed desperately but
United collected all three points to keep them top of the League.
6th
August Sheffield United
4 Leicester City 1 (Attendance: 18,224)
Line-up: Kenny, Bromby, Harley, Morgan,
Jagielka, Montgomery, Ifill, Nalis, Tonge (Gillespie 77), Gray (Shipperley
77), Webber (Kabba 77).
Subs Not Used: Kozluk, Quinn.
Booked: Jagielka 52.
Scorers: Gray (pen) 34, Kabba (pen) 81, Ifill 84, Bromby 90.
Man of the Match: Paul Ifill.
The Blades stunned Leicester City with three goals in the last nine
minutes to secure a hard-fought 4-1 victory in the opening match
of the Championship season at the Lane. The Foxes looked set for
a point when David Connolly cancelled out Andy Gray's first-half
penalty with an equaliser after 50 minutes. But Steven Kabba's 81st-minute
spot-kick and Paul Ifill's fine header three minutes later handed
United the points before Leigh Bromby's last-minute strike compounded
Leicester's misery. Neil Warnock named summer signings Danny Webber,
Lilian Nalis and Ifill in his starting line-up with Neil Shipperley
on the bench. An early 35 yard effort from Connolly was easy fair
for Paddy Kenny in the United goal before the Blade began to improve
and Bromby wasted a golden opportunity to put the Blades ahead after
17 minutes. Leicester could only clear a free-kick as far as Harley
on the left-hand side of their own penalty box. The Blades left-back
drilled the ball low across the 18-yard line with a shot which found
Bromby, who blazed over the bar from 16 yards out. Leicester remained
a threat, however, and winger Jason Wilcox came close after 23 minutes
with a right-footed shot from 20 yards which sailed just wide of
the far post. The foxes possessed some quality at times, but seemed
intent on time wasting to come away with at least a point. But,
the Blades were always dangerous and broke the Foxes resistance
from the spot after 34 minutes following Rab Douglas' clumsy foul
on Ifill as the pair contested a lofted ball by Nick Montgomery.
Ifill required treatment before Gray stepped up to coolly fire the
subsequent spot-kick past Douglas. But five minutes after the restart
the foxes drew level with an excellent strike by Connolly. Joey
Gudjonsson found the Republic of Ireland striker in space on the
edge of the Blades penalty area and he turned inside past Harley
before unleashing a powerful left-foot shot which deflected off
the Blades defender and past Kenny for the equiliser. Leicester
should have edged ahead after 63 minutes when de Vries fired straight
at Kenny from close range after his own neat footwork had made the
opening. However, United hit the Foxes with a devastating three-goal
blast inside the last nine minutes. Substitute Kabba coolly stroked
home a penalty after Johansson was punished for handball, before
Ifill nodded home Keith Gillespie's excellent right-wing cross.
Ifill helped the Blades make the scoreline more convincing when
he crossed for Bromby to chest the ball home. So, a great start
to the season and long may it continue.
5th August Football’s back. And United begin their Promotion campaign
at home to Leicester City. The Blades are among the favourites with
the bookies and will be looking for the best of starts to the at
the Lane tomorrow. Midfielders Lilian Nalis and Paul Ifill are expected
to make their debuts for the Blades but Neil Shipperley is not quite
match fit and will miss out. United will also be without summer
signing Craig Short as he serves the last two games of a ban he
incurred last season. For the Foxes, on loan signing Elvis Hammond
could make his debut after completing a five-month deal from Fulham.
Danny Tiatto is suspended while fellow midfielder Stephen Hughes
is set to miss out with an ankle injury.
5th August Paul Thirlwell has left United to join Championship rivals Derby
County. The 26-year-old midfielder arrives at Pride Park for an
undisclosed fee after being transfer-listed in the summer. Thirlwell
started his career at Sunderland, where he spent seven years, before
joining the Blades in July 2004.
4th August Northern Ireland winger Keith Gillespie has joined United after
securing a 12-month appearance-related contract the Blades. The
30-year-old former Leicester City player had been released by Foxes
manager Craig Levein. Blades boss Neil Warnock said: "He's
not quite match fit but we haven't got cover in that situation and
would have been concerned if anything happened to Paul Ifill. Obviously
his contract is very much appearance-related so we couldn't really
lose out on it."
3rd August United have sold defender Danny Cullip to Nottingham Forest for
an undisclosed fee. Cullip cost the Blades £250,000 from Brighton
in December but made only 15 appearances for the Blades before spending
a month on loan at Watford towards the end of last season.
2nd August United have given a one-year deal to South Korean teenage striker
San Lee. The 19 year old, who was with Brentford last season, earned
his deal after impressing on trial. The Blades have bolstered their
squad with the capture of Iranian trialist Sharu Naraji on a one-year
contract. The right-winger spent last season on loan at Real Zaragoza,
where he played for the B team.
1st August Paul Ifill says he fully expects to start in Saturday's opening
Championship fixture against Leicester City. The Blades winger played
the second half of Saturday's friendly against Sunderland and feels
he's now fully recovered from the shoulder injury he picked up on
the club's tour of China.
