May Derek Dooley insists the club will not be selling
Paddy Kenny. Blades manager Neil Warnock is said to be interested
in signing Birmingham goalkeeper Ian Bennett, but Dooley says this
will not force him to sell Kenny. Speaking to the Yorkshire Post,
he said;: "Just because we are talking to other goalkeepers
doesn't mean Paddy will be on his way. The idea is that we will
have three goalkeepers here who all have the ability to play for
the first team. We'll need them to guard against the problems caused
by the introduction of transfer windows."
26th
May Neil Warnock has remained tight-lipped on speculation
linking him with a move for Wolves midfielder Paul Ince. The Blades
boss would neither confirm or deny reports he had approached the
former England midfielder, who is currently considering the offer
of a new one-year deal at Molineux. "I'm being linked with
everybody by everybody," said Warnock "I can only repeat
I'm not commenting on any transfer speculation. It's true we're
looking to bring in quality players. We've already signed two in
Lilian Nalis and Paul Ifill and hopefully there will be one or two
others. But I'll only comment when I've got something definite to
say."
20th
May United have completed the transfer of Millwall
winger Paul Ifill for an initial £800,000. Ifill has signed
a three-year deal with the Blades and the fee could rise to £1m
depending on appearances and the club's progress. Manager Neil Warnock
was delighted with the acquisition; he commented: ."He's strong,
quick, at 25 he is at a great age and I believe he could walk into
a Premiership side already." Ifill struggled with ankle problems
last season and will be keen to make a fresh start at the Lane.
19th
May Neil Warnock is possibly a couple of days away
from making a big money signing as the Blades boss continues his
team building plans for next season. United have just signed influential
midfielder Lilian Nalis and are now poised to make their second
major breakthrough in the transfer market in the next few days.
Although Warnock understandably will not reveal his targets; two
players who have been linked with United are Watford striker Heidar
Helguson and Millwall's Paul Ifill. Blackburn’s Craig Short
has also been linked with United, but is expected to sign another
yearly contract with the Lancashire club. The most likely signing
among the targets remains Helguson who is highly rated and would
have the chance to reforge his partnership with Danny Webber up-front.
17th
May Blades boss Neil Warnock has made his first signing
of the close season after agreeing terms with Leicester City midfielder
Lilian Nalis. The 33-year-old Frenchman, who arrived at The Walkers
Stadium from Italian side Chievo nearly two years ago, will be released
by Foxes boss Craig Levein in July. "We're very pleased he's
coming," Warnock said. "We talked at length and he's agreed
to join us for next season. We've been looking for a player to replace
Stuart McCall and at last we've found someone who fits the bill
- he's the right age and temperament and I think he'll make us a
better team. He is aware of several of our players and knows what
we're aiming for and he's excited by the challenge for next season.
I think Craig Levein is looking to rebuild and the financial situation
at Leicester means Lilian is one of the players being released."
16th
May Defender Danny Cullip has returned to the Blades
after Watford opted not to make his loan move to Vicarage Road permanent.
He played four games for the Hornets in the closing stages of the
season. Watford boss Adrian Boothroyd commented: "Danny was
what we needed on deadline day until the season's end. I liked what
he gave to the team but I will be looking for a slightly different
type of player to take us into next season."
13th
May United have offered a new short-term deal to
Chris Armstrong. The 22-year-old defender is now considering the
offer. "He needs to work throughout the summer and then come
back pre-season and we will see if his knee is up to playing at
this level, He's not fully convinced of that yet but it is his decision."
said Neil Warnock.
11th
May Neil Warnock insists forward Paul Shaw is still
very much part of his plans. Shaw has hardly featured for United
in the last three months of the Championship season and had to take
a backseat with Warnock preferring to use Steven Kabba, Andy Gray
and Danny Webber up front. But the Blades boss wants the 31-year-old,
who has a year remaining on his current deal, to stay at the Lane
and fight for a first-team place.Warnock commented: "With the
transfer window, we need a decent-sized squad and he's part of that
- he doesn't have to move on, I'd like him in the squad next season.
There's a year left on his contract so he's going to think about
it over the summer. He likes the club. We had offers for him but
he decided he wanted to stay for the time being and that's okay
with me.
10th
May Blades manager Neil Warnock has told strikers
Tommy Johnson and Ashley Ward they are unlikely to be offered new
deals in the summer. Johnson, 34, has managed just one start since
joining the Blades in September. And Ward, 34, has struggled with
injury in his two-and-a-half year stint at the Lane, scoring just
five goals. Warnock commented: "Tommy feels he can play another
season, so although we like what he does as striker coach, he'll
probably be released in the summer. Ashley is back to fitness, he's
worked really hard, and it's disappointing he's not been able to
play more games. I'd imagine he'll have some offers too."

The Blades ended the season on a disappointing
note losing 4-2 against a Wolves team who are defiantly going places
with Glen Hoddle. It brought to an end United's already faint play-off
hopes while for Wolves it was a case of what might have been after
they extended their unbeaten run to 18 games. Kevin Cooper and Kenny
Miller scored the goals that separated the teams after they emerged
from the break level at 2-2. Danny Webber for United and Lee Naylor
for Wolves gave notice of both sides' attacking intent before Wolves
took the lead in the 12th minute. A free-kick just outside the area
came back off the wall and Seol Ki-Hyeon was first to react, with
Paddy Kenny pulling off a one-handed reflex save but Joleon Lescott
was first to react and converted from close range. United hit straight
back however when Phil Jagielka played the ball to the fast-advancing
Alan Quinn who hit an emphatic half-volley into the net from 20
yards. In the 16th minute Nick Montgomery nearly made it 2-1 to
the Blades but Wolves goalkeeper Michael Oakes got a hand to his
shot from the right of the area after he stole in unnoticed. Then
Jagielka picked up the ball and hit a curling shot from 25 yards
which beat Oakes but cannoned back off the crossbar. However, it
was Leon Clarke who restored the lead for Wolves when he slotted
home following slick play that dissected the Blades defence. United
seemed to be deflated but after 37 minutes Webber played in Andy
Gray who was given far too much room and shot beyond the goalkeeper
to level. Miller missed a golden chance to restore the lead just
before half-time when he nudged the ball through Rob Kozluk's legs
but then hit wide from the penalty spot with just Kenny to beat.
The second half sprung into life in the 50th minute when Miller
played in Cooper with a ball that split the defence to find the
substitute unmarked and he slotted past Kenny with the aid of a
deflection. Although not as relentless as the first half, there
was always the sense of more goals to come and the sixth of the
game came in the 60th minute. Rohan Ricketts found Clarke in the
area and his cross-cum-shot across goal was bundled home by Miller.
And so another season comes to an end and with United finishing
in 8th Place in the Championship. Neil Warnock summed the season
up with his after match comments; He said: "I think that performance
typified our whole campaign, we've got some good players but we
haven't got enough experience. That will be my brief in the summer
- to bring in experience and quality. If there had been one or two
of their players on our team we would have gone on and won the game”.
United defiantly need some experience in the team and maybe a creative
player in midfield which has been lacking since the departure of
Michael Brown last season. So instead of selling their best assets
(which is something they have always done) the Board should put
their hands into their deep pockets and give Neil the money he needs
to put the final pieces to the Blades jigsaw and next season we
might then find ourselves in the play-offs and challenging for promotion;
instead of being the nearly men of football yet again!
7th
May Neil Warnock may give Hao Haidong and Billy Sharp
a start in tomorrows match at Molineux. The Blades have no new injury
or suspension problems and must also decide whether to stick with
Jonathan Forte, who started last week. Striker Danny Webber is expected
to start upfront, while defender Chris Morgan is expected to be
available following tendinitis. Wolves will run late fitness tests
on Paul Ince's calf injury and Carl Cort's hamstring and thigh problems.
Lee Naylor is expected to feature despite tendinitis.
5th
May Neil Warnock has urged the United board to provide
the funds needed to push the club into the Premiership. The Blades
look certain to miss out on promotion from the Championship with
a play-off place highly unlikely, and need new blood if they are
to be amongst the front-runners again next season. Watford striker
Danny Webber looks almost certain to join permanently in the summer
after impressing while on loan - one of a number of signings Warnock
is hoping to make. "The board have helped me with Danny Webber
and now I'm looking for four or five players to take us to the next
level, Now is the time to bring players in to take us where we want
to go. There may be a couple of Bosmans but I'm looking to buy quality.
We won't bankrupt the club but I've spoken to the directors and
the fans and I'm sure I'll get their support." commented the
Blades boss.
