31st
July Steve Yates has signed for
Huddersfield Town. Yates has signed a 2 year contract for the Terriers
after United released the defender from his contract at the Lane.
The 33-year-old had been training with Town during pre-season, but
took his time before committing himself to a two-year deal at the
McAlpine Stadium. Yates had a year still to run on his contract
at Bramall Lane, but was told by Blades boss Neil Warnock that he
would be one of the players released this summer.
29th July Neil
Warnock has not ruled out bringing another player to the Lane before
the start of the new season. Warnock has already added seven
new faces to the squad, he said "If I'm honest I would like
another player before the start of the season, We have brought seven
in, but you have to remember that we released a lot of players at
the end of last season. We are a strong squad in all areas, but
at some stages last season I thought we needed more leaders on the
pitch and I think in Rankine, Whitlow and Morgan we'll have that
this season."
27th July Blades
assistant boss David Kelly says he will be his own man at the Lane.
Kelly, who made over 40 appearances for United during the 2000/01
season, teamed up with Neil Warnock as United prepare for another
gruelling season, and one which may end in promotion. Kelly will
now be working with former Aston Villa winger and new Club physio
Tony Daley. Kelly said:"I feel very fortunate that I'm back
here, I'm fresh from playing and that will help me with the lads,
especially the ones I played with. "I know that myself and
Tony will have to fill the boots left by Kevin Blackwell and Dean
Riddle - but we will do things our own way. I'm looking forward
to working with Neil. He will be a big help to me and Stuart McCall
has already helped me enormously."
26th July Striker
Steven Kabba is to have a scan on a knee injury. Kabba was forced
to miss one of United’s pre-season friendly matches last week.
Neil Warnock said "There has been a touch of soreness there
for a few days and it was best to rest it. It was nothing serious
but we just wanted to have him checked out to see if there was anything
causing it."
23rd July Chris
Morgan has signed for the Blades after leaving Barnsley earlier
this week. The 25-year-old central defender attracted interest from
four other clubs, but Neil Warnock secured his signature having
tried to sign him once before. Warnock said "I am absolutely
delighted to bring Chris in. He is a player I have tried to sign
before and he would have cost £500,000 so that is a measure
of his ability. He is another leader on the pitch and you need that
quality out there. We have agreed terms."
22nd July Neil
Warnock has confirmed he is in talks to bring central defender Chris
Morgan to Bramall Lane. Morgan had his contract with Barnsley terminated
by mutual consent this week and Warnock hopes to beat off competition
from several other clubs for his signature. Warnock said "We
are hoping to speak to Chris and his agent but we know that we are
only one of four or five clubs interested in him. However, he lives
up the road at Penistone and maybe that could swing things our way."
21st July Owen
Morrison has left the Blades to join Stockport County. He had been
told by Blades boss Neil Warnock that first-team chances could be
limited if he had stayed at the Lane. Morrison has signed a two-year
deal at Edgeley Park.
19th July Owen Morrison looks set
to sign for Stockport County on Monday after deciding against staying
with the Blades. Morrison had looked likely to remain at Bramall
Lane, but has now opted for a move to the Hatters after talks with
manager Neil Warnock. Stockport County manager Carlton Palmer said
"Owen was very, very keen to join us when I first spoke to
him, but I understood his decision to stay in Sheffield. Neil Warnock
has been straight up and honest with him and told him that he would
be playing in the reserves barring the odd game. I think he knows
he has more of a chance of getting in the first-team here."
19th July Neil Warnock
has conceded he is unlikely to make any more summer signings. Andy
Parkinson and Mike Whitlow completed their moves to Bramall Lane
this week, bringing the number of new arrivals during the close
season to six. "I'll still be having a look at whatever becomes
available, but more or less that's it now," said Warnock. "I'll
keep an eye on those I think might further improve our squad, but
I'm delighted with the players we have brought in". Kristian
Rogers, Chris Armstrong, and Jack Lester have already arrived at
the Lane to boost the Blades squad.
17th July Neil
Warnock has added two more players to United's new look squad with
the signings of Andy Parkinson and Mike Whitlow. Both players arrive
at the Lane on free transfers after impressing during pre-season
training. Speaking about Parkinson, Warnock said: "Parky is
someone we've looked at over the years, as we did when we were chasing
Jack Lester. I do believe we have got a player at the right age,
who has put football before financial gain. He is a good addition
to the squad, very quick and he can play all along the front line."
Defender Whitlow, has joined the Blades after rejecting a new contract
with Bolton. Warnock added: "We are delighted to get Mike on
board - I feel his experience in central defence and at full-back
will be an asset to the squad."
16th July Neil
Warnock will step up his search for a new centre-half following
Shaun Murphy's return to Australia.Murphy has been released from
his contract - it had 12 months to run - in order to return home
for family reasons. The 32-year-old defender arrived at Bramall
Lane in 1999, but it was Blades boss Warnock who brought him to
the UK when signing him for Notts County in 1992. Murphy was of
United's best defenders see at the Lane for many years and was instrumental
in United's success last season.
15th July The Blades
have completed the permanent signing of Mark Rankine on a free transfer.
The 33-year-old former Wolves and Preston midfielder, who enjoyed
a successful two-month loan spell at the Lane at the end of last
season, has agreed a 12-month contract. Warnock said: "We're
delighted, obviously. Mark represents something slightly different
because he knows what it's all about here."
13th July United have
transfer-listed Steve Yates, Jean-Phillipe Javary, Iffy Onuora and
Laurens Ten Heuvel in an attempt to bring in funds. Yates and Onuora
only joined the Blades last summer and struggled with injuries over
the course of their first season.
9th July Veteran defender
Mike Whitlow has agreed to join the Blades for a pre-season training
session and could sign up if he impresses during his week long stay.
Peter Ndlovu has signed a new two-year contract with the Blades.
Neil Warnock said "I'm delighted, and Peter has taken a drastic
cut in wages as well to stay here despite offers from elsewhere."
8th July Stuart
McCall has been promoted to first team coach at the Lane. McCall
will combine his new role with playing duties despite recently celebrating
his 39th birthday. McCall joins David Kelly in a new look staff
designed to help United reach the Premiership.
7th July United have
further bolstered their squad with the signing of Oldham defender
Chris Armstrong for £100,000. It is the Blades second purchase
in two days after the free transfer signing of Jack Lester on Sunday.
Neil Warnock has finally secured former Blades striker David Kelly
as his new assistant manager. Kelly resigned as assistant manager
at Tranmere Rovers last week after the Wirral club knocked back
an approach by the Blades.
6th July United have
boosted their squad with the capture of former Nottingham Forest
striker Jack Lester. Lester's contract with Forest expired at the
end of the season and City Ground boss Paul Hart made it clear that
the former Grimsby striker would not be offered a new deal. Warnock
said "Jack has always been a player I have admired and I have
tried to sign him on several occasions, I think his desire and affection
for the club will make him a good asset. But he still has a lot
to prove because I feel he has underperformed over the last few
years."
3rd July The Premiership
vultures have been warned again by the Blades that Michael Brown
will not come cheap after they slapped a £3m price tag on
the midfielder's head. Brown was an inspiration for United last
season, scoring a superb 22 goals from central midfield. Brown was
linked with a number of clubs towards the end of the campaign, and
it was widely anticipated he would move on this summer. With just
a year remaining on his contract, United will have to gamble on
keeping Brown and then losing the 26-year-old on a Bosman 'free'
next year, But keeping him could mean the Blades gaining promtion,
and reaping a permiership 'pot of gold'. Its a big gamble but the
majority of United fans want Brown to stay and help guide United
back to the top flight where they belong. The Blades board to their
credit have said they are not going to give Brown away on the cheap,
much to manager Neil Warnock's admiration; he said: "Michael
won't be going anywhere unless we get £3m. I am pleased with
the stance the directors have taken."
