March United have signed Preston midfielder
Mark Rankine on loan until the end of the season. Rankine has played
more than 500 league games and has been brought in as cover for
Stuart McCall and Nick Montgomery, who have struggled with ankle
injuries recently. The Blades have also signed Gary Kelly as goalkeeping
cover for Paddy Kenny until the end of the season. Kelly who is
36 has signed non-contract forms. Striker Laurens Ten Heuvel has
joined Bradford City on loan. Tyrone Thompson has joined Doncaster
Rovers on loan for the rest of the season.
26th March The
Blades are understood to have held talks with Northwich Victoria
goalkeeper Gary Kelly about a possible move to the Lane. Kelly,
who is 36 has previously played for West Ham United, Newcastle United
and Oldham Athletic. United desperately need goalkeeper cover, with
a possible play-off position looming.
25th March Sheffield
United 2 Gillingham 2 (Attendance:15,799)
Line-up: Kenny, Curtis (Cas 78), Kozluk, Murphy,
Page, Jagielka, Tonge, Brown, Ndlovu (Allison 70),
Windass (Peschisolido 70), Kabba.
Subs not used: Javary, Yates.
Bookings: Page 18, Windass 43.
Scorers: Kabba 44, Peschisolido 81.
A late goal from Paul Peschisolido secured a point for the Blades
in their push for a play-off Position. It was a distinctly average
performance from the Blades tonight, against a Gillingham side who
conceded six at Wolves on Saturday. The Blades performance looked
slightly ‘tired’, and with Gillingham forward Mamady
Sidibe a real menace for United’s defenders, United must be
happy come away with a draw from this game. United's first attacking
threat came when Shaun Murphy headed Peter Ndlovu's cross over the
top from eight yards just before the half hour. United keeper Paddy
Kenny foiled Gillingham in the 39th minute after defender John Curtis
blundered in the United area. The lively Mamady Sidibe steamed in
to slam a curling shot towards the top corner as Kenny, stranded
and back-peddling, stuck out a hand to tip the ball over the bar.
Steven Kabba struck a minute before the interval after Michael Tonge's
corner had been headed into the goalmouth by Michael Brown, Kabba
sticking out a foot to steer the ball over the line from four yards.
Gillingham were back on level terms in the 53rd minute. Nayron Nosworthy's
cross from the right flank was met by Simon Osborn and the midfielder
finished in clinical fashion, lashing the ball into the top corner
from just inside the area. Dean Windass was foiled by the woodwork
minutes later; Windass beat his marker only to crack his header
against the bar from six yards. Sidibe should have grabbed a second
in the 61st minute but spooned the ball high over the bar before
Paul Shaw struck in the 70th minute. Kenny could only push away
Nicky Southall's stinging shot and Shaw fired past the helpless
keeper from six yards. Peschisolido snatched the equaliser nine
minutes from time. Brown touched a short corner to Tonge and the
Canadian striker, with his back to goal, twisted to tuck the ball
low into the left-hand corner. At the end of the night a draw looked
a fair result. It’s looking likely that the cut-off for the
play-offs will be 75pts, so two more wins should be enough for the
Blades.
25th March Neil
Warnock should name an unchanged side, apart from the absence of
Owen Morrison who is on international duty. The Blades, who were
held 1-1 at Gillingham earlier in the season, currently lie 12 points
adrift of second-placed Leicester City but have two games in hand.
22nd March Sheffield
United 2 Derby County 0 (Attendance:18,401)
Line-up: Kenny, Curtis, Kozluk, Murphy, Page,
Jagielka, Tonge, Brown, Morrison (Peschisolido 79), Windass (Allison
88), Kabba (Javary 86).
Subs not used: Cas, Yates.
Scorers: Tonge 18, Kabba 55.
The Blades continue their charge towards the play-offs, and compounded
Derby County's misery with a comfortable 2-0 win against a relegation-threatened
Rams. The Blades never seemed to get into top gear today, but it
was easily enough to see off a poor quality Rams side. Blades goalkeeper
Paddy Kenny was tested just once, and that the routine collection
of a long-range drive, such was the lack of ideas and inspiration
from Derby. United went close in the opening minutes, after Michael
Brown's probing corner from the left was met by Phil Jagielka. The
midfielder pumped the ball back into the goal mouth but it was cleared
straight to a lurking Rob Kozluk who fired wide from 15 yards. Lee
Grant foiled United after another Brown corner was met at the far
post by Robert Page; the Blades centre-half produced a crisp header,
snatched at the second attempt by the Derby keeper. The Derby defence
finally cracked in the 19th minute after winger Owen Morrison charged
through from midfield, Tonge took over sweeping past two players
before lashing a left-foot shot into the top right-hand corner from
22 yards for his eighth of the season. Morrison, was himself showing
some great skill, and enjoying a new lease of life at Bramall Lane,
after leaving the perennial losers over at Hillsborough, and he
almost grabbed a second this time switching to the right flank as
he rounded Steve Elliott to finish with a fierce low strike smothered
by the diving Grant. Derby could have been further adrift as the
interval approached but for Dean Windass' goal-bound header bouncing
off Steve Elliott. Steven Kabba killed off Derby in the 55th minute
after Dean Windass threaded the ball into the path of the striker.
Kabba outpaced his marker to beat Grant with a low strike from 15
yards, for his eighth goal of the season. Windass missed an opportunity
to grab a third, hitting a post with a shot from the edge of the
area in the 67th minute. The final scoreline should have been more
emphatic, but it is the win which counts at this stage of the season.
The Blades have now stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches.
21st March Neil Warnock will give Nick Montgomery
until the last possible moment before naming his side to face Derby
County. Montgomery injured ankle ligaments against Burnley last
week and admits he is "a doubt". Warnock will also check
whether Peter Ndlovu (virus) and Stuart McCall (ankle) have suffered
any reaction to playing against Brighton in midweek. Tommy Mooney
now on-loan at Derby, will be unavailable to Rams boss John Gregory.
Mooney failed to complete a loan period at the Lane so the Blades
continue to hold his registration.
18th March Sheffield
United 2 Brighton & Hove Albion 1 (Attendance:19,357)
Line-up: Kenny, Murphy, Page, Kozluk, Jagielka,
McCall (Curtis 45), Tonge, Brown, Ndlovu (Morrison 69), Windass,
Kabba (Peschisolido 58)
Subs not used: Javary, Allison.
Bookings: Jagielka 63, Windass 75, Kenny 90.
Scorers: Windass 5, Brown 34.
The Blades moved up to third in Division One courtesy of a win against
relegation threatened Brighton at Bramall Lane. Dean Windass had
given the Blades the lead before Richard Carpenter equalised for
the visitors. But Michael Brown struck with a free-kick a 20-yard
free-kick which was driven precisely into the bottom corner beyond
Brighton keeper Dave Beasant. United swept ahead in the sixth minute,
the goal carved out by Phil Jagielka. The defender picked out Dean
Windass who finished in clinical fashion from 12 yards for his sixth
of the season. Brighton pulled level on 14 minutes; leading scorer
Bobby Zamora in space on the left flank dragged the ball past Robert
Page as he found an unmarked Richard Carpenter who stabbed the ball
in from 12 yards with keeper Paddy Kenny stranded. Paul Watson beat
the wall with a free-kick minutes later, the United keeper scooping
up the ball on the line. Paul Brooker miscued and Simon Rodger fired
wide as the Seagulls looked for a second. United's second came from
Michael Brown with a free kick just outside the box, Brown is a
specialist with goals from outside the area, and after being upended
by Albion skipper Danny Cullip in 34th minute, fired United back
into a lead.. The midfielder's free-kick was driven precisely to
the right of Brighton goalkeeper Dave Beasant and into the bottom
corner. United were once again the dominant side in the half, Brighton
looked like a relegation threatened team - with the exception of
striker Bobby Zamora, who looked a class above his team-mates. Just
before the break, Zamora was given a clear sight of goal, but Brighton's
leading scorer saw his attempted flick superbly saved at point-blank
range by the impressive Paddy Kenny. It was virtually Zamora's last
kick of the match - he was substituted early in the second half
after carrying a knock through the opening 45 minutes. Although
not a one-man team, Brighton struggled without their main inspiration,
with Kenny rarely troubled after the break. At the start of the
second half, Steve Curtis replaced Stuart McCall. Steven Kabba should
have killed off Brighton in the 56th minute as he beat his marker
to Brown's curling free-kick but headed over the top from six yards.
United brought on Paul Peschisolido and Owen Morrison, and Morrison
almost grabbed a spectacular goal minutes after replacing Peter
Ndlovu, his 40-yard run into the area ending with a stinging shot
being tipped over the top by Beasant. Brighton sub Graham Barrett
was foiled by Kenny and had the United back four in a panic minutes
from time, Page finally clearing as the Seagulls desperately looked
for an equaliser. But the Blades saw out the remaining minutes for
another crucial win.
17th March United
have three concerns for tomorrows match with Brighton, Peter Ndlovu
is struggling with a virus. Stuart McCall and Nick Montgomery both
have ankle injuries. Montgomery injured his ankle during last week's
4-2 win over Burnley. Dean Windass came through the Stoke game and
is likely to keep his place in the starting line-up having recovered
from a dead leg.
15th March Stoke
City 0 Sheffield United 0 (Attendance:14,449)
Line-up: Kenny, Curtis, Murphy, Page, Kozluk,
Jagielka, Brown, Tonge, Ndlovu, Windass (Allison 67), Kabba (Peschisolido
78)
Subs not used: Morrison, Cas, Javary.
Bookings: Brown 89.
The Blades fought out a scrappy goalless Division One game at the
Britannia Stadium as United picked up a precious point in the push
for a play-off spot. One of United's best chances came as early
as the second minute, and it was who Peter Ndlovu spurned the chance,
firing wide with only Stoke goalkeeper Mark Crossley to beat. Stoke's
Mark Wilson had an attempt with an overhead kick, but Paddy Kenny
saved. The game deteriorated from there and there were far too many
fouls as United, who drafted in defender John Curtis in the absence
of injured duo Stuart McCall and Nick Montgomery, struggled to put
together a fluent move. That said, Shaun Murphy and Robert Page
were outstanding at the back. At the other end Michael Brown's cross
caused confusion in the box with the ball falling for Steven Kabba
who miraculously fired over the bar from two yards among calls for
a penalty. Stoke's attacking forays lacked bite and when they did
make inroads, Peter Hoekstra's ambitious 30-yard shot was saved
by Kenny before Marcus Hall's long-range effort sailed wide. Clear-cut
chances were in short supply in the second half; Stoke managed to
break forward and nearly scored when James O'Connor chipped the
ball over the Blades' defence to allow substitute Bjarni Gudjonsson
a chance that he chipped over Kenny and the crossbar. Both managers
sent on fresh strikers in an attempt to find a winning goal and
Stoke's Chris Greenacre twice shot wide, but there was little to
disturb Kenny in the Blades goal. A useful draw for the Blades,
and with Nottingham Forest losing, it seems more like a point won,
than two points lost.
12th March Sheffield
United 4 Burnley 2 (Attendance:17,359)
Line-up: Kenny, Jagielka, Murphy, Page, Kozluk,
Montgomery (Curtis 80), Brown, McCall (Ndlovu 44), Tonge, Windass
(Allison 77), Kabba
Subs not used: Peschisolido, Javary.
Bookings: Murphy 58.
Scorers: Brown 17 36, Ndlovu 66 76.
Michael Brown and Peter Ndlovu both scored twice as The Blades made
it four successive wins in all competitions with a deserved victory
over Burnley. United playing some of their best football seen for
years, completely outplayed the Clarets', and move up to third in
the Division One table. Burnley should have taken the lead after
13 minutes, when Lee Briscoe was played in by Glen Little, but his
shot was saved by Paddy Kenny. This was the only worthwhile chance
Burnley managed in the half, and it proved a costly miss, as Brown
broke the deadlock after 17 minutes with a stunning goal carved
out by Phil Jagielka. Jagielka picked out the unmarked midfielder,
who coolly dispached his right-foot shot into the left-hand corner
from the edge of the area. Steven Kabba almost cashed in on blunder
by centre-back Ian Cox who half stumbled as he chased the striker
into the box, Kabba charged on but Marlon Beresford was quickly
off his line to block the shot and grab the ball with Dean Windass
waiting to pounce. Brown snatched his second in the 36th minute,
this time curling his free-kick from the edge of the area over the
wall and into the top left-hand corner. United had completely dominated
the first-half, and Burnley had looked like a relegation team and
not a promotion-chasing team. In the second-half, Dean Windass wasted
a golden opportunity to make it three and Marlon Beresford saved
efforts from Nick Montgomery and Kabba as the Blades threatened
to run riot. Gareth Taylor gave the Clarets' a faint hope when his
header reduced the deficit after 63 minutes. But, it was Peter Ndlovu
who killed off Burnley four minutes later after Kabba beat Cox to
the ball on the right flank, his low centre was met by the unmarked
Ndlovu who beat the stranded Beresford from 12 yards. Ndlovu got
his second after 72 minutes running on to a Nick Montgomery pass
to lash the ball into the right corner from just outside the box.
Robbie Blake added Burnley's second in the 90th minute, but it made
little difference to the final outcome.
12th March The
Blades welcome back Peter Ndlovu from suspension, while Owen Morrison
and Dean Windass are available after both were cup-tied for Sunday's
FA Cup success over Leeds. Windass will probably replace Wayne Allison
in the starting line-up. On-loan defender John Curtis is also contention.
9th March Sheffield
United 1 Leeds United 0 (Attendance:24,633)
Line-up: Kenny, Jagielka, Murphy, Page, Kozluk,
Montgomery, Brown, McCall, Tonge, Allison, Kabba
Subs not used: Peschisolido, Ten Heuvel, Javary, Cryan, Smith.
Bookings: Kabba 59.
Scorer: Kabba 78.
A goal from Steven Kabba was the decider as the Blades deservedly
progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Cup at the expense of Leeds
United. The Blades dominated throughout, with Michael Brown, Nick
Montgomery and the ever busy Stuart McCall controlling midfield.
Leeds defended in numbers as the Blades limited them to long-range
efforts and Kabba especially was on top form as he tormented full-back
Ian Harte throughout the game, not forgetting Paddy Kenny was also
outstanding in goal. The wind was the only spoiler with a heavy
cross wind making the game difficult for both teams. Indeed, both
sides found it difficult to make chances in front of goal with Leeds
having slightly the better of the first half chances. But the commitment
of the Blades players was not in question, as Sheffield United competed
with, and outperformed Leeds in every area of the park. Leeds did
have the best opportunity before the break with Harry Kewell beating
the offside trap, only to be foiled by Paddy Kenny before inexplicably
blasting the rebound into the kop. It was Kewell's last meaningful
contribution. He was replaced at half-time by Eirik Bakke after
suffering a back strain. Fired up by their performance before the
break and with the wind behind them the Blades almost took the lead
within a minute of the re-start. Kabba beat the Leeds offside trap,
and forced a save out of Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson seconds
after the break, when he escaped Harte's attentions but was denied
by a fine fingertip stop. The two sides continued to cancel each
other out, but Seth Johnson broke the shackles to test Kenny with
the long-range drive after 70 minutes. Kabba looked the most likely
to break the deadlock for the Blades - and he was on the mark as
Sheffield United went ahead with 13 minutes left. Michael Brown's
cross caused confusion in the Leeds penalty area, and when Michael
Tonge's shot was blocked, Kabba was on hand to score from 10 yards.
After Kabba's strike the Blades looked more likely to add to their
tally than Leeds did to equalise, with Brown forcing a spectacular
save from Robinson with a cleverly worked free kick. There was still
time for a moment of controversy with referee Steve Bennett showing
Danny Mills a red card. Mills pleaded his innocence - and the official
admitted it was a case of mistaken identity after earlier booking
Seth Johnson. But there was no mistaking the joy around Bramall
Lane at the final whistle, as we celebrated a place in the FA Cup
semi-finals. A great a for all Blades fans to remember, in years
to come Blades Fans will look back and say 'I was there, the day
we beat Leeds in the FA Cup 6th round'. And there's more to come
I'm sure.
8th March The
Blades are without four players for the FA Cup 6th Round tie versus
Leeds United at Bramall Lane on Sunday. Peter Ndlovu and Wayne Quinn
are both serving one-match suspensions, while Dean Windass is cup
tied and Steve Yates is injured. Michael Tonge is rated as "70-30"
by Warnock as he attempts to shake off an ankle injury, while John
Curtis, signed from Blackburn this week, was not registered in time
to play.
6th March Neil
Warnock is still trying to bring in a new goalkeeper as the Blades
push for a promotion place. United have no cover for first-choice
keeper Paddy Kenny. United need cover, with some crucial games still
to be played. Warnock said: "Ideally, we'd like to bring someone
in permanently on a long contract or if not that, then at least
a three-month loan. But we need to get somebody in quickly because
we've only got the one keeper. We've got our targets in mind but
as of this moment there's nothing concrete been arranged."
5th March United
have signed non-league defender Ashley Sestanovich. Neil Warnock
had been tracking the former Manchester City and Millwall youngster
who is 21. Sestanovich has agreeing a two-year deal with the Blades.
4th March Grimsby
Town 1 Sheffield United 4 (Attendance: 6,897)
Line-up: Kenny, Jagielka, Kozluk (Curtis 79),
Murphy, Page, Montgomery, Brown, McCall, Ndlovu (Morrison 87), Windass
(Allison 84), Kabba (Peschisolido 77).
Subs not used: Javary, Allison.
Bookings: Kabba 26, Peschisolido 82 .
Scorers: Windass 12, Kabba 25, Kozluk 32, Brown 86
The Blades killed of a poor Grimsby Town side to take three crucial
points in this important division one game. United were unchanged
from the team that beat Rotherham last Friday, with new signing
John Curtis among the substitutes. Goals from Dean Windass, Steven Kabba, Rob Kozluk and Michael Brown did the damage as the Blades
eased to victory. United's first chance came when, from a freekick
on the right, Brown's cross was met by Kabba who just headed over.
Then a miss-kick from the Grimsby goalkeeper Danny Coyne fell to
Peter Ndlovu who was all alone but rushed a great chance, to shoot
woefully wide. The first goal came when Windass tapped in a simple
goal on 12 minutes, Grimsby failed to clear their lines from a corner,
Ndlovu then crossed in from the left and Windass was unmarked to
sidefoot home from eight yards out. United’s second came after
25 minutes, when Kabba nipped in to dispatch a right-foot past Grimsby
keeper. The game was virtually over when the Blades made it three
in the 32 minute, Kozluk blasting a low 30-yard shot through a pack
of players to deceive keeper Coyne for his first goal for United.
Grimsby’s goal came a minute later, when midfielder Stuart
Campbell hammered in a shot off the post. Grimsby came out for the
second half full of running, but any hopes of pulling goals back
died when Alan Pouton was dismissed for a foul on Kozluk, Poulton
had already being booked, and so a sending off was inevitable, but
the referee appeared to give a straight red card for the lunge at
Kozluk. Brown wrapped it up after 86 minutes with a superb left-foot
shot angled across Coyne from outside the penalty area. So after
losing four League games on the trot the Blades are firmly back
on track with two good away wins.
3rd March United have
completed the loan signing of Blackburn Rovers defender John Curtis
on a three-month deal. Curtis has agreed a deal which keeps him
at the Lane until 30th May and he will go straight into the squad
to play Grimsby Town. But Curtis is not eligible to play against
Leeds United in the FA Cup 6th Round on Sunday due to the seven-day
rule for loan signings. Curtis can play at full-back or centre-half.
Tommy Mooney has returned to Birmingham City after United decided
to terminate his loan deal.
